I know musicians in general tend to lean left and some are very outspoken about their beliefs. It rarely ever bothers me, but damn, I've never seen anything like what I'm seeing now. It must just be social media giving artists a new avenue to voice their opinions. Some are damn near cringeworthy.

Take Grizzly Bear for instance, who has an outspoken gay member who seems to post for the band on Facebook. Here is a recent post.

Sorry, only have mobile link

quote:

Who else is excited for Thanksgiving? So much yummy food! Yay! Yummmmm! Oh hai!?? What? Wait, we slaughtered millions of Native Americans and stole their land? Yayyyyyy! You know what else is cool? We are a fricked up racist country and stop with ur bullshite "but whites can be discriminated against too!"....or "just because we voted Trump doesn't mean we're racist!"...oh, honey, your poor white privilege. "Trump's America" is a continuation of white supremacy. I CANNOT deal with whites that feel "marginalized". This country is built on blood, and all y'all "make America great again" idiots are literally harkening back to a fictional idea of the past. White supremacy still lives, but ur attempt to make it "great again" is a huge step back on progress. It's a fantasy for white people that never existed and for everyone else was a collective nightmare. Let's make America great again? So let's spray paint swastikas on (RIP) Beastie Boy's Adam Yauch memorial PLAYGROUND? Somehow, I have more liberal sound minded people on here than the band does on FB....but make no mistake. You have voted for a candidate that is ENDORSED by the KKK...if that isn't enough to take a look in the mirror, not sure you have a chance. "But the emails !!!", let's just pretend all that shite is TRUE. Like, ok. Let's just say Hillary is a horrible lying warmonger....guess what? Domestically, Trump has incited so many hate crimes in just 10 days it surpasses 9/11.... The frick were we thinking voting in a reality TV star? Wanted to shake up the system? So did I! But I didn't choose a candidate that invited hatred and appoints literal white supremacists to their cabinet. How's that for fricking with the country? U like it? My rights as a gay man are in jeopardy.... and millions of others are even worse off. So eat your turkey, and be grateful you aren't under attack because if you voted for Trump you're pretty much saying your white privilege "trumps" the millions of people that are victims of the hate he enabled and encouraged amongst "the white working class"...for the rest of us (and I'm not religious) ....God Help Us...P.S. "Alt right" is a bullshite term to normalize white supremacy. FIGHT! -Ed

The comments are comical. Several conservatives calling them unprofessional. I don't think I'd use that term because who expects artists to be "professional"? If I was a famous musician, I don't think I'd want politics to get in the way of art, unless I'm writing a politically influenced album. I think it's ok to voice an opinion, but they are taking a bit far, no? He's responded to many comments on his posts, and it just seems damn pathetic.

I know this isn't Foo Fighters, but they do have a big following. Is call myself a fan of them, but, not a huge one. This just leaves a bit of sour taste in my mouth.

HAve any of you had similar issues with artists you like?

I have no idea who Grizzly Bear is...really.

When any person, artist, performer, actor, store owner...whatever, starts to make not just comments, but rants, while I am spending my money for their services, I draw the line.

If someone has an opinion--hey, they are entitled to it. But to rant when I am paying to be entertained...no.

I normally don't care about this sort of thing, but that's a bit over the line.

Most record labels are based in LA, where being a conservative is akin sporting a swastika arm band at a Bar Mitzvah. It's understood that one should be a liberal. I typically hate it when artists get political, but it is inevitable when one lives in a creative bubble egged on by other like-minded people. Greenday went full into political commentary with "American Idiot", and while that album is considered to be among their best, they've never been the same sense, nor have they seen the same success.

The reason is simple: politics are divisive. Taking a political stand runs the risk of alienating those that do not agree with you, and guess what? Those people purchase and listen to music too! While political stances can bring attention which will boost short term notoriety and sales, it often comes with lasting long-term consequences as those who disagree decide to tune out those overtly political messages which offend their world view.

Going "political" as a musician is akin to a network investing in reality tv. Reality tv shows bring in a temporary ratings bump as everyone talks about how over the top and edgy it is. The kinds of people who like reality tv come rushing in. However, those who don't, the ones who were watching in the first place, soon get turned off and leave...never to return. Those reality tv watchers, they have short attention spans and soon move on to the next big "oh no she didn't!" show. The only way to keep them is to keep pushing the envelope of trashyness until it simply becomes unsustainable and collapses. Then, the network is left with nothing: no loyal viewers, no re-watchable original programming, no cohesive brand identity, and no creative direction to go in. Once you go political just once, you will always be viewed in a partisan lens (see Dixie Chicks).

I stopped paying attention to the opinions of artists a long time ago. They emote rather than think and have a pretty limited grasp of history or how most people function in their lives. And after listening to their fans for years their ego gets bloated and they start thinking that they are better than everyone else. Actually, most artists do avoid this trap but the minority that fall into it are very vocal and the media are all too happy to air their vapid views.

Ted Nugent opened for KISS at the Cajundome in 2000 and he dropped the N word....but of course it was a white-only audience so no one cared

This is the perfect answer- These artist don't know what the real world is like. They live in a bubble. In the words of F Zappa, " Shut up and play your guitar"

Agreed. If they want to rant, they should go on a speaking tour and see how many people pay to listen to them.

Most musicians and actors are for the most part airheads. Only an airhead would be stupid enough to listen to their stupidity.

I went to a Pearl Jam show in 11/2013. I can't recall which shooting just happened? Maybe sandy hook? They played Jeremy and I thought "here we go. Here comes some anti-gun verbal excrement"... All he did was point out the origin of the song was nearby in Richardson Texas (suicide not mass shooting). Really only said something like "can't we work together so this happens less"? Something very un-arguable (real word?). And he left it at that. I was impressed. In Dallas. Heart of GWB country. Know your audience. And just fricking play.

I just finished reading the memoirs of singer Howard Kaylan (Turtles, Zappa, Flo & Eddie). In it he describes The Turtles playing at the White House in 1969, at the invitation of Nixon's daughter Tricia (Nixon was not present). I believe Tricia also invited Grace Slick to the WH around this same time as they were former college classmates. Even The Guess Who played the WH around this time.

Apparently up until this point there was the idea that if invited to the WH you put politics aside and performed.

This had definitely changed by The Reagan administration in the '80s, when there was so much controversy over The Beach Boys getting uninvited to a gov't park show.

So a 1%er is lecturing other people about privilege? That's really rich (pun intended).

It's easy to get up on your high horse and pass judgment on others when you don't have to live with the consequences of the failed policies the left foisted on us for the last ten years. What about the millions of people who were thrown off their health insurance by Obamacare? Do their concerns not matter? Apparently not, at least to the buffoon who wrote this drivel. He will never have to worry about having access to a doctor, unless he puts all his money up his nose or in his veins.

Also hypocritical to lecture about privilege while dismissing the carnage that might have resulted from Hillary being a warmonger. Thousands of innocent children slaughtered in the Middle East? What does he care? He sleeps in the safety of the US and doesn't have to worry about a Hellfire missile killing his family. Brown children in other countries must not matter.

So the tldr is he should check his own privilege.
