Magical Mystery Tour is a better album than Sgt Peppers

I'll back it up with some reasoning:

-So many more highlights on Magical Mystery Tour (MMT). I could argue that the album is more of a mountain/valley experience to Sgt Peppers more plateaued overall feeling. The highs are higher. And frankly When I'm Sixty Four just fricking blows and drops Sgt Peppers points just by including it. I like Paul whimsy as much as the next guy, but jesus.

-The sort of essential Beatles-psychedelia that is copied by many to this day (cough Tame Impala) really took form with Sgt Pep, but it was really off the races on MMT. I mean when those muffled drums come into Blue Jay Way the first time. Or the last minute or so of I am the Walrus. Or the bass line in the intro to Baby You're a Rich Man, with that squelching little synth line. Good stuff. The only thing I can truly say Sgt Peppers has over in this department is Day in the Life, obviously one of the crowning achievements of the band and of music in general.

-I think as a concept album MMT has more of a coherent structure than Sgt Pep. I think the album opener presents a really interesting story for the rest of the album to fit into. It's interesting it wasn't even originally packaged to be an album in the UK, but as a soundtrack. But in the end I think it actually all fits together better than the supposed best concept album ever, Sgt Peppers.

-The lyrics are downright weird, and very open to interpretation. Not sure the Beatles ever got quite as sinister as I Am the Walrus again. Or as weird. Also it has some subtlety to it's eastern lsd induced message. There isn't a George sitar jerk off song on this one to hit you over the head with how psychedelic it all is, man. Just well packaged little explosions of pop.

-Sgt Peppers gets the press because it came first and was a phenomenom. But Magical Mystery Tour is grossly underrated and is a better overall album. They were still working together and not making big messes like the White Album (an awesome mess, but a mess). It wasn't a tack on like Let it Be. And it's just better than Abbey Road. And while Revolver and Rubber Soul are very good they weren't QUITE there yet. I consider MMT to be the best Beatles album.

thoughts.

I Am the Walrus and Strawberry Fields Forever are Lennon's two greatest contributions to music, especially the former.

I don't disagree with OP. I can't really rank these two along with Rubber Soul, White Album, and Abbey Road though. All 5 are incredible albums by the greatest band ever.

Ya I can't rank beatles, my favorite songs and albums change every time i get on a big beatles kick.

At one point I though Sgt. Peppers was best, one point White Album, at this point I would say you are right in your OP, but again its hard to say with the beatles for me.

Both are really solid albums in the Beatles canon as reflected by their acclaim and the record-buying public's positive reaction but I respectfully disagree.

Sgt. Pepper was no. 1 on the pop charts for longer than MMT, it's currently the third biggest-selling album in UK history, it's the biggest-selling album from the Beatles' catalog(including compilations) with roughly 32 million units sold, the biggest-selling album of the 1960s, 4 Grammys including Album of the Year, placed in the National Recording Registry, and ranked the no. 1 all-time album by Rolling Stone.

These are spicy, yet reasonable, takes. I dig. I'm not sure I'd rank MMT > Sgt Peppers but I agree it is an awesome and criminally underrated album. Also wanted to show some love for Flying

Heard Lennon introducing ELO´s Can´t Get It Out of My Head, saying they carried the torch of this tune and ambience of the Beatles.

not the best but I listen to MMT more than sgt pepper
but remember that MMT was an EP in Britain...for the US release they added strawberry fields and penny lane, which were non album singles and for my money the two greatest Beatles tunes ever. couple that with fool on the hill and the US release is the better album

This definitely helps MMT's case here. Very good points cgrand.

And IMO - Let It Be is underrated.

I'm at a current point where Abby Road is the best to me that followed a point where the white album was the best. So hard to choose :(

Sgt Pepper....better album
MMT....better individual songs

Revolver and Abbey Road are better than both.

Isn't this so? Not just trying to compare albums, but singles issued both A and B sides, even covers of others. For example:

Anna

Devil in Her Heart

Things We Said Today

Like you I get on with preferring HELP and then I think that Beatles 65 is the boss. All good stuff.

There's not a damn track on MMT even close to Day in the Life and Shes leaving home and you know that!

Its bullshite to even have this conversation.

I feel personally offended
