Often they are one hit wonders but they don't have to be.

What are your songs that are absolute winners, especially:

1. Those where the band/artist didn't have anything else as good.
2. Those that took the band/artist to the next level.
3. The pinnacle song of band/artist that is/was big.
4. Signature songs
5. Songs that lasted when the band/artist faded away

Some of mine:

Sweet Caroline-Neil Diamond
Walking in Memphis-Marc Cohn
Whiter Shade of Pale-Procol Harum
Purple Rain-Prince (as good as some of his stuff is, this one is just so good)

Ray Manzarek said "Light My Fire" was the Doors lightning-in-a-bottle song: it captured the SoCal Summer of '67 vibe and spread it across the nation. Sure did.

Saw these guys get lumped in on some stupid VH1 "one hit wonders" show. I never understood that. Yes, technically that was their huge hit and nothing else was as commercially viable as that, but I think they're one of the best bands from that era. Both of their full length albums are great listens.

Hate that people lump them in with the likes of Deep Blue Something.

It's going to be tough for this one to not devolve into a "best by" pissing contest. I'm trying to keep with the spirit.

Sweet Caroline-Neil Diamond

I see where you're going with this one, but for me, Neil Diamond IS Coming to America. It's going to be tough to pin one song on him.

quote:

Walking in Memphis-Marc Cohn

In true "1-hit Wonder" fashion - this song definitely has a spiritual component that is hard to define - particularly as a secular Jew claiming he is a Christian "tonight" - the "ghost of Elvis, etc."

quote:

Whiter Shade of Pale-Procol Harum

Another song with a deeply spiritual vibe - almost a hymn.

quote:

Purple Rain-Prince (as good as some of his stuff is, this one is just so good)

While I list Purple Rain as Prince's best song - I think this just opens up the floodgates to washing out your original concept altogether. No way his little royal purple weirdness is going to fit your OP - without it losing its meaningful distinction.

So, I'll offer an example - Cyndi Lauper. She had a brief, but bright, pop career that included, among others, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" - and the deeper, more serious "She Bop" which completely got past the censors, despite being a song exclusively about masturbation. But I'm not talking about those songs - I'm talking about "Money Changes Everything" (written by Tom Gray) and "Time After Time" (co-written with one of The Hooters, Rob Hyman) - both of those songs seemed to really have something to say - those 2 songs in her catalogue really elevate her status as an artist - rather than just a pop star (IMHO).

I think that's the sort of thing you're talking about.

Could be. This is a topic waaaay better suited for sitting around a fire talking about.

Where I was going with PR was that it is just so good that it stands high above his others, even as good as they are.

"Money Changes Everything"

Great call

The Hooters

Love them. Can't put one of theirs in my category but Karla with K, Satellite, and of course And We Danced are fantastic songs.

Then they are a one hit wonder.

I'd argue Money Changes Everything was lightning in a bottle for The Brains, more so than Lauper's cover version...

I just don't see how these fall under your criteria.

I'm not sure Sweet Caroline even reached number one like a bunch of others songs of his did. Song Sung Blue, America, You don't bring me Flowers, I am I Said. Maybe b/c Sweet Caroline is being played at ball games now it could fall under no. 5 but his other songs are still relevant. Can you go an entire 4th of July without hearing Coming to America?

Prince doesn't need any explanation.

I'll submit:

Black Velvet - Allanah Myles
Life is a Highway - Tom Cochrane
