Is it hyperbole to call D. Allman a genius?

Traveling today and Melissa comes on the XM. Been a while since I've listened to AB, and I was once again awed by the sheer brilliance of that band. Gorgeous sound.

I wonder who sets the bar for genius, would it be 50-Cent?

Are you saying that Dickey is a better guitarist, or that Berry, Jaimoe, Butch, or Gregg were better musicians?

Best at what? If you're gonna say he wasn't the best in the band at his respective instrument, then... Lol @ you

I mean, shite, he made Dickey better. They were able to play off of each other like nobody's business. One would be hard pressed to find a band with two guitarists that could go back and forth between lead and rhythm like that. Some of the longer versions of 'You Don't Love Me' makes it seem like they were talking to each other.

Duane Allman was dead before Melissa was recorded.

Dickey Betts is underrated.

Correct, for the Eat a Peach version. But you can find renditions with Duane playing. I think there is an actual studio one with the outfit that just Gregg and Duane were in together.

I'm only posting it because besides the fact that it was true, Duane said it,

quote:

Once, during a radio interview, a listener called in and asked if Duane was going to continue playing twin guitar leads. "That's Dickey Betts playing that other guitar, that's not me," Duane responded. "He is just as bad as there is, man. He can smoke the guitar, man. See, I'm the famous one, man; he's the good player."

Thanks for confirming that Duane was a humble guy.

I'm not calling Dickey a slouch by any stretch of the imagination. They both had very distinctive tones and licks when playing lead, I just prefer Duane's style a good bit more.

Didn't take me that long to figure out I was way more of a Betts fan than Allman Brother's fan. Generally speaking of course.

Dickey's roots are more country and honky-tonk oriented, for the most part. Duane's sound was more blues/jazzy.

Of course, I say that, and Dickey is the one who wrote 'Liz Reed, which is by far the most jazz oriented song the Brothers made.

Yeah, I despise the blues. Melissa is the only song with Greg's vocals I can stand.

I was reading about a band I like a lot and trying to figure out what it was that I found so appealing. One review mentioned that the members of the band tried to remove all blues from their playing. I think it was Television, but I am not certain.
