his version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is terrible, terrible, terrible... delivered without any feeling, whatsoever.

I prefer the original NIN version of "Hurt".

I'm a huge Cash fan but that entire IV album is a let down of the covers. They knew his health was getting bad and just kept him recording a little bit longer than they should have. His two own songs are the best on that album. Don't even try to listen to First Time ever I saw your face. It's borderline cringe.

His best cover off the American Recordings is Rusty Cage IMO.

I love his version of Hurt. Maybe it's been overplayed since it came out, but I honestly find it haunting.

I typically prefer the original over the cover, but I think Cash's version is far superior to NIN. Though I like both.

Same.

The Acapella "Yesterday" cover by Boyz 2 Men is another cover that is better than the original

The gravelly, deep-throated, slow delivery works on "Hurt" because it feels like a voice in pain. The lack of inflection adds to the mood because it lacks enthusiasm, as a crushed soul would actually sound.

But "Bridge" is supposed to be uplifting, reassuring, and beautiful. That exact same delivery does not work for the Simon & Garfunkel classic.... it sounds absurd.

Willie Nelson's cover is a thousand times better.
