"Can'T You See?" is easily top 10 (5?) Southern rock songs.

"Take the Highway" is up there too. Marshall Tucker is definitely much less brash when compared to the other bands.

You people aren't apt to pay attention, are you?
Stand corrected.

CCR belongs in the top 3.
Not southern rock. They're from California.
oh, okay, I thought you meant Southern Rock bands as in Southern Rock Music. But you just mean bands from the south. Then the answer should include REM

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd
2. Allman Brothers Band (musically superior but I prefer Skynyrd's overall body of work)
3. ZZ Top
I will not try and be cool and edgy like most in here. I think you are spot on with the top three (and the rest are interchangeable). The only thing I dont agree with is that I feel that Skynyrd is in fact musically superior as well. Their overall overall body of work is pretty incredible.

Canned Heat is folk and blues rock.

No, I do in fact mean first generation southern rock music.
In order to be classified as southern rock a band needs to hail from the South, play music that has roots in at least two of the following: blues, country, folk, bluegrass, rockabilly, or rock, and has lyrics which typically adhere to the blue collar ethos.
CCR's geographic origin sets them apart from the other bands mentioned in this thread.

Thank you for your commentary/contribution.
Another One...From the Road is one of my favorite live albums of all-time.

Toy Caldwell really doesn't get his due as a guitar player. He was just a finger picker with a Les Paul plugged straight into a couple of Twin Reverb Amps. MTB was "almost" a country band but had a ton of jazz influence as well.
Here's a sampling from the olden days
Take The Highway from 73
Ramblin from same show
This Ol' Cowboy (Audio with a Goofy Slide Show)

They pretended to be from the south i.e. Born on the Bayou. They are southern rock.

No, because the classification of southern rock also deals with the geographic origins of the band just as much as it does the sound. It is a regional music scene limited to the American South.
Then that excludes ZZ Top.

ZZ Top, otherwise known as "The Little Band from Texas" is from the south last time I checked.

Prior to MTV, ZZTop was a Texas Blues Band, after MTV they became a Texas Pop Band...
