Depends on what you're looking for.

A couple of those guys play waaaaaayyyyyy too much fill and "too many notes" for my tastes. I'm a sucker for someone who stays in the pocket but a fraction behind the beat . . . with occasional really tasty licks.

Levon
Russ Kunkel
Zigaboo
Al Jackson

I know. I'm a boring old fart.

Meh, I'd rather Gavin Harrison or Morgan Agren. Both play with a lot more taste than Portoy. Portnoy is the EVH of drummers. And he dresses like a dumbass.

For obvious reasons I put those guys in the same general category. I admire their playing a lot, and enjoyed some of the albums they were on. Hard to pick one out of those for me. They all had/have great technique and I enjoy listening. Again, my taste in drummers that I really dig tends to go in a little different direction.

A lot of people underrate him as a drummer, but he's very good.

Great session guy and has played with everybody. Like him a lot.

The first "superstar" drummer in rock and roll. Great player but totally insane.

Mesmerizing is the best way I know to describe him. I love playing his stuff.

Carey

Bonham

Peart

Grohl

Freese (I don't want to say he doesn't belong on this list, because Josh is great, but there are lots of guys in that "almost" category - if you offered Matt Cameron, for example, I might put him above Grohl, and Brad Wilk and Chad Smith would be way, way up on my list, too, as would Alex Van Halen.)
