Bonham - Way ahead of his time. Most rock drummers' style comes from him, one way or another
Carey - Most technical and creative drummer in rock IMO. The planning and skill that goes into what he does is obvious
Peart - 2nd most technical and creative IMO
Freese - Best drummer around for keeping a beat / groove and throwing in licks that fit songs perfectly
Grohl - Balls out hard drumming. Lots to be said about Grohl's style

Tough to do IMO.

ETA my reasoning and to add that these are all my favorite drummers but I would have added Carter Beauford and Brad Wilk to the list.

I agree, these are all of my favorites. If I had to choose one it would probably be Bonham. I think he was ahead of his time.

Well this isn't necessarily a "best drummers" list.
It's a list of my favorites, and I wanted other opinions.

While he is not in the same league as the guys you mentioned, one of my favorite drummers to see live (maybe it's because he's local) is Stanton Moore.

Well, if you appreciate good drumming, you should check out his work with Porcupine Tree. The guy is a boss. Here's a video on him describing how to play fills with tact. Probably one of the best videos an established drummer can watch.

I feel like Dave Grohl would disagree with this. And Jimmy Chamberlain just woke up from a drug-induced coma and he's pissed.

Chamberlin wasn't on the list. I would put him above Grohl.

Grohl's wouldn't be too far off. I would guess

Bonham
Peart
Carey
Freese
Himself

ETA: This is my personal preference, not a ranking

As for Dave Grohl, I mean no disrespect to him. He is a fantastic drummer, but he isn't as "proficient" as the others. I am not even a big fan of most of Freese's bands, but the guy is in demand for damn good reason. I own more albums with Grohl on the stool, fwiw.
