After a lot of thought, I had to downvote you for your subject despite sharing the great video.

Aside from the fact he wrote the song, Russell best classified as a musician’s musician and songwriter. His influence is deep and wide. Elton John considered him a mentor. He played a a session musician for acts from The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Ike and Tina Turner and others. He is in the Rock n Roll hall of fame.

He never had huge success as a solo artist, but that doesn’t speak to his talent and ability.

One time I got to go backstage to Willie’s bus and they opened the door and lo and behold Willie came out, pigtails and all. He shook my hand and said he would like to visit with me, but he had to go jam with Leon Russell.

Leon Russell was highly esteemed in the music world, even if his popular appeal as a performer may have appeared to be somewhat limited. He also recorded country and western music under the pseudonym of Hank Wilson. I think he was one of those guys who just loved music and performing more than the actual spotlight.

From Wikipedia:

The depth and scope Russell's contribution to the music of the twentieth century is illustrated by the following:

Didn't Elton more or less copy his playing style? I know he's spoken fondly of him through the years as well as recording the duo album

I am not sure if it was so much his playing style as it was his stage presence and persona. The signature hat/minstrel type of flash and showmanship. But I am not entirely sure about that. It appears that much of that was a shield for Russell who was apparently very insecure about performing publicly. Here is a pretty good article about Leon Russell.

Here are two versions of Tight Rope. One is the original album version, not a live perfromance, the other is from 2010 and live. Leon would not be with us much longer, he passed in 2016.

Elton John and Leon Russell made an album together in 2010--The Union. Only time Elton ever did an entire album with another artist. That should tell you something.

Here's a full lenth video of the HBO Documentary.

I think that came about because Elton John's husband was playing a lot of Leon Russell on his iPod while they were on vacation. Apparently, Elton John thought, "Man, I forgot how great that guy was. I ought to do something with him".

Hadn't read that, but their relationship was much deeper and goes back to before Elton hit it big. Read this about Leon Russell from Elton John's website.
