They appear (as a group) to have terrible tastes across the boad - music, television, film.

Taste itself is subjective, but I stand by it. Our music, our films, even our television programs were better - a few of the modern television dramas notwithstanding.

Of course a lot of that is "screen in" bias, as we don't listen to the old crap - just the old gems, for example.

But, a lot of this hip-hop - especially the past 10 to 12 years, is absolutely craptastic.

Well, calling it crap-tastic (though my gut would have me agree) is an unsophisticated and non-evidence based approach to criticizing it, in my opinion. Calling it simplistic (i.e., for the simpletons) is a much easier way to get the point across with some substance backing it

Have you ever watched the Sopranos episode, "A hit is a hit"? Music is subjective - although the pros have developed an ear for what will sell.

There was a shite-ton of crappy rock bands in the 60s, 70s and 80s. But nothing like a Kanye West who was lionized - back then, there weren't machines and other methods to conceal a complete lack of talent. As it is now, hip-hop has devolved to sampling samples of other samples in sampled work

And even cats that I think are talented (Dre) are guilty of oversampling, overproducing, "overeffects", in order to conceal this general lack of talent. I know it is cliche, but NWA, Tupac, Eminem - at least they had something to say. Repetitive and fairly simplistic. I like The Chronic - but I can't pretend it is a musical masterpiece - it's Dre and Snoop, back in the day, being Dre and Snoop.

And along with the odd Tupac and Mathers album - that's the cream of the crop. And it is the dominant cultural form, right now, not just music - the whole lifestyle - and to no good end, IMHO.

Popularity does not equal quality. Milli Vanilli won a fricking Grammy. In general, people have taste for shite.

I'll never understand why people are so threatened by hip hop's popularity. It's a good thing that kids don't like the same thing their parents do. The millenials are asserting their independence from the previous generations (I'm also willing to bet Spotify's client base skews younger). I'd be horrified if young kids were primarily listening to the same stuff I was back in 1991. Get your own bands.

Hip hop has been around since 1977. It's not going anywhere. Like any genre, it has its high points and its low points. It's not my go to genre, but I like a lot of hip hop acts. Then again, a lot of them aren't talking to me. And that's a good thing.

It's disappointed that we are drifting further and further away from people that actually sing and play instruments.

I'm 25 and I've been into rock music my whole life. I always wanted to play guitar and drums and what not. Most my age and younger are all about lil Wayne and J Cole, and Drake, etc. Look, it's fine if you like that stuff. I occasionally listen to some of that, but when that is what everyone listens to and looks at as the kings in music... It bothers me.

I'm sorry, I just don't see Lil Boosie being in the same stratosphere as people like Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, BB King, etc. And if we take it modern day artists like Gary Clark Jr, Leon Bridges, St Paul and the Broken Bones and so on and on on... the talent levels aren't even close.
