He's a very, very talented guitar player. I just cannot get past his voice. I really, really hate it and it completely ruins his music for me. My wife on the other hand...

I can't believe any male would seriously listen to John Mayer

John Mayer has been known to be a huge douche in the past at times and put out one of the girliest songs I can remember with "Your Body is a Wonderland," but "Gravity" is one of the smoother guitar songs. That's a great song and that disc had some great guitar work. People that don't even like him tend to like that CD.

JM has always been my favorite, but I don't think this album is gonna be anything revolutionary. I love Moving on and Getting Over and Love on the Weekend. He's got me anticipating the next 4 songs already. Hope I'm not disappointed

Couldn't agree more. I like his music enough, and recognize his talent, but damn, like you said...he can't seem to find HIS sound. It's holding me back from loving his music.

But I definitely dont think hes out here frustrated trying to find some brand new sound

Maybe he's gotten over it in recent years but I've heard him complain about it in interviews. Also in "Where the Light Is" when he is backstage changing clothes between sets he talks about it. Comes off sounding a little whiny to me actually.

How so?

He's in that top tier of guitarist from his generation. He is well respected by many greats for a reason.

I'd say Trucks is the number one guy, but Mayer is elite. Regardless of what you think of him, objectively he is good.

He hasn't changed anything.

On a personal level he's a tool bag. As an musician he's always changed his sound up from album to album which is good.

Some worked out really well and some not so well but it's change and he's not sticking with the plug and play formula on pop hits that Clapton did while on his run in the 80's.

Glad he's doing different types of songs even if I don't personally like some of them.

(Not hating on Clapton btw)

MOVING ON AND GETTING OVER is a definite chill song and is very different. But, to "change the game" would be something like when PUNK happened and we didn't understand why we liked some of it. Mayer is good but not game changing good imho.

Go watch videos of him play and your opinion might change. Also, I find it comical when grown men judge other grown men's taste in music like it says something about them.

I've seen him twice

It's a music board. That's part of the discussion.

He has some timeless stuff, just wish he avoided some of the pop bullshite.

He was the Vinnie Chase of music during this time. He'd probably disagree with you.

Moving on is the only song that I'll listen to for a long time from these first 4 songs. I've said this before, with his guitar skills, he has so much potential to be one of the great musicians, but he sticks with poppy bullshite sound. He needs to do another continuum type album
