I've been looking at the Seagull S6 original, heard anything bad about them?

Heard about them but never played one, honestly man you best bet is to go to your local Guitar Center and test the brands you are looking at and go from there. If not its all hearsay

A beginner acoustic for $300-$400 range? I'd be looking in the $99-$150 range myself.

If that's the money he can spend I say go for it, I started with a POS for about a year and once I went up in price the sound and feel blew my mind (as a young lad).

Do that. Really really good guitar for the money if you can spring for it.
I've had one for 20 something years and I've never wanted another 6 string. I'll stack mine against ALMOST every Martin, Taylor, or Gibson I've ever picked up.

They have a cedar top instead of spruce. Some people don't like it. Including the buddy of mine who plays guitar. He said "Cedar?. Grrrrr." Or something like that and I just got an Alvarez. Good guitar as well.
Nothing wrong with a Seagull. I would say it is a top of the line "intro" guitar.

Yeah is rather spend alittle more upfront then buy a cheaper guitar for 2 reasons:
1) less likely to stop if I put that much money into it
2) I want a guitar I can grow with, not switch out after a year or 2

Once you can play Every Rose Has Its Thorn you will be shopping for Martin D-45's

Check a few pawn shops, you can always find decent acoustics. Ask them what they have in the back, too. I still play my first Alvarez acoustic from Cash America Acadian at Government 1993.

The S6 is exactly what I've had my mind set on once I get the money to upgrade. It really is one of the best you can get for that price range. The solid top is nice. I've even listened to some blind comparison videos with the S6 stacked up against more expensive options and I ended up preferring the S6.
I've been playing on a Fender CD 100 for several years now. I would consider that more of a true beginner guitar but it has served its purpose and has been a decent intro guitar but I can't wait to make the move to the S6.

My "guitar buddy" has a Washburn. He got better. Now has a Taylor. He would tell you they are good.
It suffers however sitting in his living room next to a $1200 Taylor.

Lots of great cheap acoustics out there. I would just recommend avoiding painted acoustics. I should say, the painted acoustics with the thick poly finishes. Of course you could get one in a nice sunburst with a thin finish.

I have an intro Washburn that I've been playing for about a year. It has been a great beginner guitar and I only paid $125 for it. It has a low action, stays in tune, and sounds pretty damn good. I will probably be looking to upgrade but not anytime soon. My skills don't quite merit an upgrade yet

Yamaha FG740SFM - $399 Sweetwater.com
I have a Yamaha LL6 (dark tinted) and it's a fantastic value for the guitar. My best friend bought one of these for his fiancee' and it sounds great. Yamaha makes great mid-tier instruments and it would be a great guitar to grow with.

I guess I would still consider myself a beginner. Probably more intermediate. I bought a big baby taylor. Love the guitar. its around 450 though. But now I want to get a really nice taylor
I need to get back at it. Havent played much with work lately
