Favorite guitar tone

Curious to know what everyone's favorite guitar tone is. Not favorite guitarist or best player. Just what actual tone is your favorite. I was listening to some guitar only tracks of RHCP Stadium Arcadium and it got me thinking of this.
My favorite is Kurt Cobain. To me his guitar tone is the definition of what grunge should sound like.
I also like The Sword and The Melvins. Not surprising with The Melvins, since Kurt was heavily influenced by them.

Roy Buchanan, and no one else comes close. The Messiah Will Come Again He did that without any electronic effects, just a guitar and amp.

Gary Moore on "Still Got the Blues" and SRV anytime he has played anything.
You get the fat les paul sound and the cutting strat sound.
As far as just sound combinations, i really love the way rhythm guitars track through a Mesa Boogie Mark series amp (especially a iii or iv). Super chunky like any rhythm sounds by John petrucci. I also love a strat through a Marshall plexi boosted in the front end with a King Of Tone or a Klon. Strats and teles sound incredible through small fender combos like the deluxe reverb or princeton. If you ever get a chance to play any humbucker equipped guitar through a Bogner Ecstasy, then do it. That is one amazing sounds amp as well.

eric Johnson. has everything covered to perfection. pristine fender cleans. marshall crunchy rhythm & warm full overdriven leads.

There is playing tone and there is equipment tone. Playing tone is in the hands and is very subjective. If you're talking about pure signal from the guitar / amp combination I would offer these:
Peter Buck - The early stuff with the Rick / Fender Twin sound.
Neil Schon - For me, the sound he got on the Evolution album is amazing. I know it's more or less just the old Les Paul / Marshall thing but his sound is really tasteful and expressive on that album. More so than on later stuff. Roy Thomas Baker may have had a hand in it.
Ian Moore - Particularly on his early albums. Songs like "Train Tracks".
Ty Tabor - Kind of like Eric Johnson but with more balls and rock and rollness to it.
Jamie West Oram - Particularly on the Fixx's 80s albums.
Michael Schenker - From UFO. Really sharp and flawless sound.
Kevin Shields - The MBV stuff from the late 80s / early 90s.
Pat Travers - The 70s era.
Malcolm Young - The Gretsch pick-ups are the secret to AC/DCs unique guitar tone.

Probably cliche, but I love the clean out of phase strat sound like on Little Wing or SRV's Lenny.

I love the pumkins sound up to mellon collie also. I read before that they sound terrible live though. Corgan layered guitar tracks on the albums like nobody's business though.

A $100 guitar, cheaper amp, and some weak a$$ BOSS pedals. Guitar now can be sold for $1000 or more but until his death was an entry level Fender.
Gilmour gets my vote.
