Eta: thanks for starting this whole thread, srb. I'll have a whole lot more questions than opinion or experience to add! Hope you all will suffer this fool.

That's what it's for! I've been playing just under 2 years. I played guitar for ~14 years and cut off my pinky and ring finger on my fretting (left) hand. I needed an outlet Always wanted a kit so I figured I would pick it up.

As fun and challenging as guitar was, I've figured out drums are more my thing. I'm one of those people that wakes up at 5:30 and goes balls to the walls until 12 so it helps me burn some of that energy.

These are my sticks

Girlfriend bought me a set right after I started playing since she knew I was a huge Hawkins fan. I just love how they carry momentum in your hands and how full and boomy they play. I've tried to go to lighter sticks but nothing sounds as good as those do to my ears. I can't find any with the big sphere tip either.

They were tough for me to learn how to control but once I did I fell in love with them.

The biggest key to playing jazz is listen to a shite ton of jazz music. Chances are, you've heard thousands of rock songs, but very few jazz.

Very true. I find you have to immerse yourself in styles to truly play them. There are subtle nuances that you understand only by listening and playing as much of that style as possible. Jazz is extreme for your independence I'm sure you will find how much better your playing in rock funk or whatever becomes after playing jazz.

Yeah that sounded intelligent.

I meant to say you will also see an improvement in your other styles from learning to play Jazz.

Seriously, talking about jazz can open up a hundred page thread, as there is so diversely much, that it can´t be ´categorized´, but as for drum playing, it´s hard as hell, and develops you, absolutely no doubt.

Spacing, time consciousness, it´s all there.

One benefits, big time.

Everyone I have ever talked to has said this. I will probably start studying some soon.

My biggest fear when playing jazz. I'm constantly saying, "Wait, where'd the one go?!?"

Stick grip question:
Bare, grip tape, or gloves?

I started playing 5A and would lose my grip, so I switched to 5B and held them better. But, still would have my right hand slip on fills. I wrapped my sticks and now I'm blistering! Argh. Guess I need the pain to gain.

In my experience, slippage is inevitable (however, I worry much more about breakage). I played with taped fingers (used cloth medical tape).

5Bs feel like I'm playing with baseball bats. 7A or Steve Jordan Sigs for me. Never had a slipping issue. I typically play traditional grip more than match grip, idk if that makes a difference or not.

Bare. I've never even really thought about using tape or gloves, although I probably should have back in the day. It would've prevented a lot of nasty blood-blisters...

This. Once open or ruptured, it´s imposible to play.

I taped sensitve, blistering, peeling or crack prone áreas, not each and every digit.

The grip tape I've got on a pair of sticks causes a blister on my 2nd finger, right hand. Think I'll go to a little athletic tape on fingers for some grip. But where? End of thumb? Index finger in the middle? Wrap my whole palm?

I would guess you'd need to wrap the spots where you're getting blisters. Of course, as I'm getting older and more curmudgeonly in my drumming practices, I would also suggest relaxing your grip, allowing the sticks (and your wrists) to do the work.

Thanks, os.
I've been "playing" for 5 months. I just recorded my play and listened to as much as I could take. Survey says:
I suck.

But really, I love this stuff and my family has some real patience in hearing my noise!

Bare. Over time, blisters become hard calluses, and you will never need tape or gloves to prevent blisters, as they will no longer happen.
