I get the hate for M&S, but what's the gripe against the Lumineers?

If this is your response to quality music, I give up.

The Lumineers an indie-esque band for people that really don't like good indie rock.

Not into the whole bluegrass rock thing. But they are still better than most of the stuff on the radio.

Every Mumford and Sons song is exactly the same. Quiet jingle-jangle for the verses, then crank up the bluegrass for the chorus. On every song. It's never good, for me at least, when a band comes on and you know exactly who it is but you can't figure out which song it is. And this is after only two albums.

Mumford and Sons is formulaic pop using acoustic sounds instead of EDM or hip-hop beats. Yes, they play their instruments but so does Nickelback. Nothing more "legitimate" about their music, really.

Not really, but for the sake of argument, even if this was true, they'd still be a step above Nickelback.

The fact that they've only released two albums makes it easier to argue on their behalf. They still have plenty of time to tweak and add nuance to their sound.

This could be said of a lot of bands that are considered to be more "legitimate" than Nickelback. Most Aerosmith songs sound exactly the same (with some exceptions).

There was nothing original or legitimate about Nickelback. Ever. The "formula" that they used was basically ripped off from other cheesy post-grunge bands like Creed. At least Mumford's "formula" is somewhat unique. And the fact that Marcus Mumford isn't an entitled douche like Chad Kroeger helps his cause.

I'm willing to bet that they don't stray too far off the beaten path

It's a sped up version of folk, Some could say that Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murpheys were M&S before M&S

Give it a bit, Mark E. Mumford will let all the hype get to his head, and when the criticism rains down, he will be just like Ol' Chad

M&S is absolutely nothing like either of those bands.

Eh. Those bands are Irish folk mixed with hard rock. Mumford's sound isn't overwhelmingly Celtic and there aren't really any hard rock influences, either.

Mumford and Sons are from England, not too far from Ireland, but that's irrelevant

The point is that it's folk music, with a twist
FM-Whistle the wind
Not something unique
Avett Brothers were doing this long before M&S, as well

I'm not claiming that they're pioneering some kind of new genre or anything, but they do generally have their own "sound" and aren't a blatant rip-off of any other band.

Nickelback is just an even more insufferable Creed.

their are loads of other popular artists who are a lot worse.

and there are loads of americana/folk artists that are a lot better

M&S and Lumineers is new and different to those that don't realize there is HUGE music scene out there other than what is played on the radio.
