One of the greatest grunge bands of all time (however, some might even include them into the Jam Band category). J. Mascis is a legend.

I agree. One of the most under-appreciated bands of the last 30 years.

I disagree with your "jam band" label. Mascis likes to solo, sometimes for several minutes. But most of their songs aren't like that.

Just amazing, undeniable talent. Band could've been bigger but chose not to be. J Masics was/is more concerned w spending more time w his guitar and finding revolutionary things to do with it then tour.

Also, touring always broke the band up. True musician.

I saw them at Tipitina's in 1994, after Without a Sound came out. My ears rang for a week. God, they were LOUD. Some girl hopped up on the amps and laid on her tummy, swinging her legs like she was watching The Brady Bunch. (With all the noise they were pumping out, it must have been like she was lying on top of a vibrator)
Saw them at the Varsity a few years ago. Just as good, not as loud.

They were post punk to me... nothing grunge or jam about them in my mind!!

And yes.. They were at their best when Lou Barlow was (and now is again) with them!!

You're Living All Over Me and Bug are all-time classics!

I only got into them over this past summer, and I couldn't believe I'd overlooked them all my life. They would have been perfect for me when I was a teenager, especially considering how much I love Neil Young. I'm seeing them in the East Village in December for their 30th anny.

This. It took a while for me to hear what I needed in the songs. Once I heard it, I was hooked. The compilation disc I have is one of my favorites.

Absolutely love all their stuff, criminally underrated.

Start Chopping is my favorite.

Their albums are great...but there is a reason they call them Dino-bore Jr. when it comes to their live shows.

Yes, yes they are. Little Fury Things, Freak Scene and Pond Song are some of my all-time favorites. I also love The Wagon - it's on the album that has the little girl smoking a cigarette...

Saw them in 1989 (yes, I'm old) in CT - they were awesome - and yes, very loud. Saw them again in maybe '92 at Lollipalloza and they were, just loud. I think it was just J Mascis and some studio musicians, not the original 3 guys../

ETA: "sometimes I don't thrill you, sometimes I think I'll kill you, don't let me fricke up will you, when I need a friend it's still you"...

One of my favorite bands as a kid. Somehow the freak scene video ended up on a playlist my 3 year old was watching recently. Had to turn it off with a quickness as I enjoy her still sleeping at night.
