Was there anyone else doing that style of music before he appeared on the scene?

It's fair to say Jerry Jeff Walker and Jimmy Buffett influenced each other. They spent time playing and partying together decades ago.

He made pop reggae for white people. Cringe worthy actually.

That said Buffet is a genius and if you are a reader check out "A Salty Piece of Land", also has parlayed the island shite into casinos, restaurants clothing etc. Smart guy.

His folk, rock stuff that he did before the island stuff is actually pretty good.

I don't recall many of his songs being "Reggae." Calypso, maybe, but not reggae...

Buffet was a country writer/singer, and I really enjoyed his music until Chesseburger In Paradise. I jumped off that shrimp boat in a big hurry.

He and JJW spent a lot of time in NOLA and were mainstays at the old Country Music Festivals at the state fairgrounds. That was the mid-70's and outlaw country at its best.

As good as Son Of A Son Of A Sailor was it marked the end of his relevancy in country circles. Havana Daydreaming and Changes in Latitude started the spiral to full Parrotheadism. Dude's a genius to pick up on all that.
