Only one album to judge. I'm (amazingly) just discovering them. As a band. I knew Layla like everyone else.

What's the pedigree of the other members not named Eric Clapton.

Bell Bottom Blues is on constant rotation on YouTube and I am foolishly trying to learn the song on guitar.

What else did the do that is INCREDIBLE? Or is it all incredible.

Got to Get Better in a Little While (Live Fillmore 1970)

Their live stuff kicks arse. A tour with Duane would have been truly insane.

Jim Gordon was a gnarly drummer who ended up killing his mom and has been in the psych ward since the early 80s.

Couple this with Duane Allman's obviously early passing and titanic amounts of drug abuse by all members and you end up with a pretty tragic band history. Not much material but it's all gold. One of the more interesting stories in rock.

My favorite studio album!

Bobby Whitlock on vocals too.

Listen to Key to the Hiway as Duane ad Eric exchange licks. You will hear some hooping and hollering.

Why does Love got to be so Sad?

Obviously pretty good for the Layla album to be unanimously regarded as one of the greatest albums across all music publications, the album to reach the top 20 upon release and the title track to reach top 10 on the charts. Considering most of the band contributed to George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album(excluding the legendary Duane Allman), yeah it's pretty arguable these fellas were damn good as a unit.

I know Allman was part of the band. Didn't know all the story though. I just know an appearance on. Johnny Cash show and it is just 4 piece. Whitlock on keys. Clapton on guitar. A bass player and drummer.

Do you consider Duane Allman a Domino or a guest?

Because if the former, are you really asking how good was a band with Clapton in his prime and Skydog?

I was really asking for opinions. I have no opinion of my own. Just lost my shite over how good they were in YouTube videos. But knowledge of them and or an intelligent opinion on them or their history? I can't give you.

My understanding after reading Skydog is that he was in the band but only really recorded with them. It really wasn't even a band per se, but just Clapton wanting to put together a badass lineup to cut an album. Remember that Duane was also a highly sought after session player and played on many records for others. The book mentioned that Clapton and the others just got together and all equally contributed to create the album. I always thought Clapton's best work was when he collaborated with others. (Cream, D&D, etc.)

I recall seeing a documentary about the album and a guy who worked the mixing console was asked about the "live jam" vibe that Clapton wanted for the entire album. This guy had worked with the ABB, so he said something to the effect of: "What I was hearing was fantastic and yet strange. Having worked with the ABB, I was unaccustomed to hearing Duane play even a single note wrong - but this is what Eric wanted it to be - to sound like they just picked up their instruments and jammed. And basically, Eric would play the melody and describe what he wanted to do, and then that's what they did, just jam."

Read that ABB biography: According to that Clapton was a big ABB and Duane fan. He was recording the D&D albumn in Miami and caught an ABB show and got the idea to get Duane to record with him and approached him then.

That Dominoes Live at Fillmore East is incredible. Used to be out of print for a long time and wore out that LP.

I started a similar thread about 6 months back...I was just like you in that all I'd heard was Layla (since radio plays the piss out of it) and actually got turned off from it because I'd heard it so much. So one day on a whim I just started youtubing the full album and I was BLOWN AWAY.

Awesome, awesome album.

Sort of... He was on like 3-4 songs on Layla and never toured with them (as far as I know).

Eh... I love both. Neither blows the other out of the water.

IMO, their version of Little Wing is the best.
