Def Leppard WAS supremely influential - although it is obvious (and, therefore, a dubious honor) that initial influence was on hair metal acts and folks like Bon Jovi, who stayed as close to the Def Leppard template as possible - as the 80s wore on. However, they are also clearly, explicitly an influence in some post-Grunge rock acts - notably the All American Rejects, and many, many others. The sound, the melodies, the layered production.

Yeah, I just don't agree. Maiden and Metallica were doing highly layered productions very early on as well.

Again, I love them. I just think it's their unique spot that they weren't very influential.

Glad to see you like White Lightning. That is considered virtually non-canon by the people in this thread.

Caught the concert last night at Smoothie King.

Tesla was great, as was REO Speedwagon (although, there was either a microphone problem or Cronin's voice is getting weak [and, yes, I know how old he is]).

DL delivered a damned good show. Very good production and they had a good playlist, including some off their new album. One encore-finishing with Rock of Ages and Photograph and they knocked those out.

I was also there and agree.

Tesla was solid for what they were/are.

REO showed their age a little from the performance side, but the music itself was solid - especially the older, heavier stuff. Ridin' the Storm Out was a highlight.

Def Leppard is also showing their age a bit except for Phil and Vivian. But they did play 17 songs. The production was great and the sound was at least as good as - if not better than - the last time I saw them several years ago. They also had a go-pro on the end of Phil's guitar and would show it on the big projection screen at times for cool close-ups.

Both REO with a reference to Keep Pushin' on and DL with a reference to the tragedies their group has endured made a personal connection with the audience about the recent catastrophic flooding.

Attendance was about 7,000 - 8,000 by my guesstimate but may have been affected by the flood since there were several scattered empty seats in the mostly filled sections.

tl;dr summary - They're old but they still ROCKED!

Phil is the oldest and Vivian's fighting cancer.

I've always had the impression that Sav has had lifelong health issues, mainly because the Bell's Palsy has been so obvious for so long. All of them have had various substance abuse issues, but Phil overcame his first and became a vegetarian. Joe obviously likes to eat and drink. Rick remains the youngest, but that difference is not so extreme now that they're all in their 50s. Hell, Phil will be 60 next December (2017).

He's a poster child for vegetarianism.

How many songs did they play? In Lafayette they only played three. THREE!

It's this. From the 80's and then today it's not as strong. He sounded the same way when I caught them at the Woodlands a couple of years back.

What the hell does that mean? Tesla is musically and lyrically superior to Leppard in every conceivable way.

I actually liked Tesla's performance. I was never really a follower based on their starting a bit later in the 80s when I was older. The comment was based on the fact that for whatever reason they were not as commercially popular like many other groups who were not marketed to the masses on MTV, etc.

Gotcha! Man I saw Tesla open up for DL in 87 on their in the round tour, got to tell ya that they had to dim the lights twice to stop the crowd from screaming Tesla! Tesla!.... Was a wild show and I've been a Tesla fan ever since. Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch shredded those guitars that night.
