It is rare when a band releases its masterpiece record as its debut. Usually it takes a few for them to gain the experience and unity required to create one, and even that is rare for most bands don't create a masterpiece.

Who are some of these bands? The debut doesn't necessarily have to be their best record, but it is a classic in perfection. A few I know of:

Jane's Addiction - Nothing Shocking
Arcade Fire - funeral
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
Pearl Jam - 10
Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
The Doors - The Doors
Natalie Merchant - Tigerlilly
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Jeff Buckley - Grace
The Strokes - Is This It
Alabama Shakes - Boys and Girls
Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Janis Joplin - Pearl

good call! Great band, great album.

As for rap, I would add:

Digital Underground - Sex Packets
-this record is pure brilliance. The musical orchestration are fantastic and original (something that's always missing in rap), the raps are great and the lyrics/themes are clever and funny. This is my personal favorite rap record of all time

I don't agree at all. For a lot of bands, their first contains material that's been honed for years and they have a huge catalogue to choose from.

Definitely a masterpiece, but This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About is their debut. It's pretty close to a masterpiece itself.

All great choices

I'll throw in John Prine's debut and The Band's Music from Big Pink
