I think Billy Joel is a wildly underrated songwriter, primarily because he is so crushingly uncool and so desperately wants to be cool. The cool kids do make fun of him for that, but Joel writes great, great pop songs. Also, he's fantastic live. Really.
The Stranger is also a better album than Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I vote Joel.

Billy Joel for sure. I recognize Elton's greatness but I prefer Joel.
