Not at all. The fills on "Rain" are sick.

Bigger might be impossible, but stuff I'd find cool:

Duane Allman. Jimi Hendrix, David Bruce, John Bonham

David Gilmour, Eric Clatpon, Mark Knopfler in a group

Neil Young, Bob Dylan in a group

you need songwriters to match the Beatles

Copeland and Van Halen were songwriters for two of the biggest bands of all time. They can hold up with Entwistle helping out as well. If you are worried about Elvis writing lyrics, lyrics aren't that important and don't need to be deep to work with great songs. Many Beatles songs prove this.

Edit: Replace Elvis with Michael Jackson and that band is absurdly pop but would also put out some interesting music.

It's not really possible, but Brian Wilson would have to be in the mix.

Also, Henley and Frey are a very strong songwriting team.

Drums/Vocals: Levon Helm
Guitar/Vocals: Eric Clapton
Bass: John Entwistle
Guitar/Vocals: Gary Clark Jr
Guitar: Sonny Landreth
Keyboards/Vocals: Greg Allman

I don't know about better, but would be one hell of a show

I don't think it can be done today b/c rock is no longer the dominant form of music.

However, how about if in the 1970's/1980's these folks had joined up for a super-group:

Eric Clapton: writer, vocals, guitar
Sting: writer, vocals, bass
Bob Marley: writer, vocals
Willie Nelson: writer, vocals
Duane Allman: writer, guitar, backup vocals

All of those guys can write and they have differing styles but with some crossover (for example Clapton covered a Marley song, several Police songs had a clear reggae influence, both Clapton and Allman were in Derek and the Dominoes).
