Cowboy/Western Songs

I was listening to my playlist yesterday and Townes Van Zandt's - Pancho and Lefty came on.
Always loved this song...revisited it recently and will say that the opening lines have a new level of depth to me than they did than when I first heard the song in my youth.
I love Willie and Merle, but I believe that the rawness of the song is only truly captured by Townes Van Zandt's picking and gravely voice.
"Living on the road, my friend
was going to keep you free and clean.
Now you wear your skin like iron
your breath's as hard as kerosene.
Weren't your mama's only boy,
but her favorite one, it seems.
She began to cry when you said goodbye,
and sank into your dreams."
Is that the perfect cowboy song intro, ever? Thoughts???
What are some other songs that paint a picture of the rugged old West? I'm thinking about putting together a separate playlist of just Westerns and this song is #1 on the list (which will probably end up with a shite-load of TVZ songs on them before it is finished).
Hard to believe TVZ has been gone 20 years.

Several Marty Robbins songs.
Big Iron paints a great picture of the middle of town duel between the lawman and the outlaw.
El Paso could be the basic description of a western movie.
I also think you could add Chris Ledoux's Yellow Stud or Charlie Daniels' Caballo Diablo in there.

While not "the rugged old West", Kristofferson's version of Sunday morning coming down has always been very vivid to me.
On the sunday morning sidewalk
Wishing lord that I was stoned
Cause theres something in a sunday
That makes a body feel alone
And there's nothing short of dying
Half as lonesome as the sound
On the sleeping city sidewalk
Sunday morning coming down

Ramblin' Jack Elliot - If I Were A Carpenter
...this is a GREAT cover.
Townes - Lungs
...This was featured on season 1 of True Detective when the killer is revealed and the tug is passing down the river. The lyrics are simple yet amazing and his picking is perfect.
New Riders of the Purple Sage - Dirty Business
...Just a great song that tells a story of a small town on the brink of collapse. Plus Jerry Garcia on trippy pedal steel is honey to my ears.

Obviously Marty Robbins.
I will submit Michael Martin Murphey and Tom Russell
Tom Russell - Tonight We Ride
Michael Martin Murphey - Geronimo's Cadillac
MMM also has an entire album of traditional cowboy songs called "Cowboy Songs" that I would recommend.

Plainsong was a short-lived English band of the early '70s featuring Ian Mathews, the former lead singer of Fairport Convention.
Plainsong - "The Goodnight Loving Trail" (1973)
Yes, the song title sounds like a porno, but it was actually a cattle trail of the 1870s, named after cattlemen Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving.
