I don’t really know. So many great years. Personally, I would take my top 5 of 1997 over my top 5 from any other year:

Built to Spill- Perfect From Now On
Modest Mouse- Lonesome Crowded West
Radiohead- OK Computer
Yo La Tengo- I Can Feel the Heart Beating as One
Elliott Smith- Either/Or

What a coincidence b/c I was just going to say 1987 as well. My reason being that almost every single major artist or band put out an album that year.

Then 1983 & 1984 a close 2nd.

That’s pretty nuts. Looks like White Album and Village Green were released the same day. I never knew that. What a day! Both are probably top 10 albums ever for me.

I came here to mention 1991, as well. Consider that year also saw the releases of Metallica's Black Album, both of Guns and Roses' Use Your Illusion records, and RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Let's be even more precise with 1991. In the span of a month and a half you had

Metallica – Metallica (The Black Album), August 12, 1991
Pearl Jam – Ten, August 27, 1991
Guns N’ Roses – Use Your Illusion I & II, September 17, 1991
Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magik, September 24, 1991
Soundgarden – Badmotorfinger, September 24, 1991
Nirvana – Nevermind, September 24, 1991
