The ABB circa 69-71 were not only the best southern rock band (though Duane would have said that's like saying "rock rock") of all time, but to my ears, the greatest live group to have ever existed.

The only other one would be the original iteration of Skynyrd, but it is still an easy choice to go with the ABB for me.

Skynyrd I could see maybe but it's no contest for me. I suppose you could try to make a case for Little Feat also.

Panic is clearly the best Southern rock band now. Not sure about GOAT though. Not knocking them at all, I love me some WFP. Just not sure they're in the same convo as ABB.

I would argue that The Allman Brothers aren't a true Southern Rock band by definition. Southern Rock is not a label bestowed as a result of geography. It has a very distinct sound, style, and ethos, to it that allows it to stand apart from other classic rock of the 70s and 80s. The Allman Brothers are as big of an influence on all Southern Rock bands as any artist, particularly the blues elements of Duane and Dickey's guitar playing.

However, while their music often utilized the distinct elements of country and rock found among the Southern Rock genre, their implementation of jazz arrangements sets them apart from their peers. They were just about as close to being a progressive rock band as any American group during that time.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws, early .38 Special, and The Marshall Tucker Band all share a common sound which sets them apart from the Allmans.

I would argue that CCR is more of a Southern Rock band than Greg, Duane, and Company. The only thing that seems to be lacking for the boys from Northern California is their lack of country observable in every other Southern Rock group.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have to be in the discussion but I have to give the nod to Skynrd. Marshall Tucker band is great too.

I'll have to go with Skynard and Allman. I just cannot see anyone else competing.

Take a random poll of white southern men 30-50 years old. Lynyrd Skynyrd in a landslide

It's incorrect to pigeon hole the Allman Bros. as a "southern rock" band, imo. They were far, far more than that.
