Mine would be hands down Joni Mitchell. Probably my favorite female singer of all time, and one of the best songwriters ever.

quote:

Townes

SINGER/songwriter.

I think that excludes Townes. If judging voice. Townes was incredible. But like Dylan and Prine you weren't coming for the voice.

I don't know who balanced the two skills better. Add to it the 1970's? frick you OP!

Answer is like a unicorn and an OT 10. It does not exist.

Jim Croce
Van Morrison

Nod goes to Morrison but Croce is like Bo Jackson, tGoat who just wasn't around long enough.

I'd take all these over Joanie:

Cat
Van M
JT
Randy Newman
Nick Drake
Carol King
Lightfoot
Croce
Chapin
Harry Nillson
Probably even Carly Simon
Probably forget a few too

Yeah I didn't say Neil Young or Warren Zevon like I've had a head injury or something . Neil freaking Young all day.

Croce and Lightfoot

I'm biased toward Kristofferson, but I'll admit only his studio recordings have decent vocals and he's a dogshit live singer.

For me, Jim Croce. It's absolute shame he died so early. One of favorite singers/songwriters ever. I think he would be considered the best ever if he was still alive.

Joni, Neil, Nillson, all great, the best. But nobody mentioned John Prine. He is right up there with the others.
