Lots of bands have made albums that were considered departures from their previous material. What are some favorites and some radical departures?

Regardless of your feelings about Metallica post-1980s, this at least merits a mention...

I came here to post Achtung Baby, so I definitely agree there. The Cult, I dunno. Still a great album, though. Although, maybe Billy Duffy going overboard with the guitar solos might be considered a bit "risky", depending on who you ask, lol...

Might not be considered a "risk" album in retrospect, but IMO REM's Automatic For The People was kinda risky at that point in their career...

I agree with this, but I dislike the direction they stuck with following it. I have not been much of a fan of their post Kid A work with buy a few exceptions

First synth sounding album from them and it ruled. So did SSOASS as well.

Wasted Years is a great comeback song for Maiden, too.

Would you consider "American Idiot" to be a risk album (punk rock opera, band had been off the radar for over 5 years = possible nail in career coffin)??

Yes I would. That album signaled a new direction. They had been fairly low-key since Nimrod. They put themselves at the front of pop punk at the time. Tell me what rock radio stations weren't playing Boulevard of Broken Dreams? Even pop stations were playing that song.
