Point is, not "all music" sucks in 2012. That's a ridiculous all encompassing statement.

I dont consider a lot of what has been recorded post 1999 as music.

but its undeniable that the majority of the music put out recently pales in comparison in originality to music in our past generations

govt tide

90% of mainstream music or "pop" music has been terrible during this time.

It's definitely music, it's just horrifically bad.

govt tide:

quote:

That doesn't speak well for the 1999 and on time period. Before then you had the same amount of good hard to find music AND boatloads of good music on the radio and on the charts.

which i've already shredded that statement by posting actual billboard charts of all the pop crap throughout the 90's.

you:

quote:

There are still good bands out there, but most of that indie crap is uninspiring for my tastes. There are reasons most people have never heard of much of the stuff being produced. It's average.

what is "That indie crap".. i noticed you like to be vague and not list specific bands.

you just sound old

there was also this:

quote:

Whatever decade you were growing up in. Most people will argue that the music in their teenage years was the best ever.

and you said:

quote:

Not for me. I like the music of the 70's, 80's and 90's. Not sure I could say one is better than the other.

aren't you around 50? so wouldn't you have been a teenager in the 70's? So that statement absolutely applies to you. Why you trying to lie??

My feelings are the majority of the music on the radio is crap even the Rock stations. I agree that you really have to search for good stuff but really you always did. The evolution of music will always be this way. Its what separates the "cool" kids

60s! Not even that close for me.

*I realize some of these artists had hits and albums after the 60s.

The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Jimi, Janis, James Brown, The Motown artists, The Who, Cream, Byrds, Kinks, The Doors...list goes on.

And Motown. Detroit was cranking out serious music during that time.

Aww...your feelers are hurt because people don't like your obscure crap.

There is good music being made today, just don't see anything that will be a classic in 20 years. Pretend all you want. Don't be a drama queen.

Then came disco....

I proudly displayed a Disco Sucks sticker on my car, the only bumper sticker I have ever owned.

60s and no other decade comes even close. The impact on society alone makes it #1.

Look at the 50's and then look at the 70's. Why the big change?

Best periods I can recall, not actually decades:

65-80

Followed by 88-98

I'm glad you mentioned Motown because that's why I added the early 60s ( pre 1965) to the greatest era of music ever. Motown is arguably the most underrated musical scene in history. Motown....ALONE...made the 60s a badasss decade musically. Throw in all the amazing rock n roll music on top of that and the 60s are clearly the golden age of music.

What I'm saying is there was good music then as is there is good music now.

But pop music has always been dumbed down low hanging fruit. Consistently throughout the decades.

Everyone likes some pop music, but it is geared toward women and teenagers. It ain't all bad though. Quite a few songs on this list of the top songs of 73 that were damn fine tunes.
