I get what you're saying Kafka, I'm a music lover, and I only know a handful of Beatles songs, the one that comes to my mind first is "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", but after that, I don't really hear much of their songs played.

Songs like "Don't Stop Believing" and "Sweet Home Alabama" are songs that have been out for years and years, but still are played in all kinds of different settings and mediums. With the Beatles, you don't really hear their songs played to the same extent as classic rock staples like I previously mentioned. You go tail-gating at an LSU game, you're not likely to hear any Beatles songs, rather Skynyrd and the Allman Bros., maybe it's because this is the South, but that's besides the point.

The Beatles are pop culture icons for sure, but to me, the Stones were the cooler band with the better songs.

this is VERY logical. You don´t hear CCR before soccer matches in England, either.

True dat.

The Beatles songs I like are ones that don't get played much or are a bit obscure: Old Brown Shoe, One After 909, Not Guilty, Don't Let Me Down, I Got A Feeling, Things We Said Today

I knew a guy in college who claimed this was his favorite Beatle song. I love when someone has a random pick like that.

Agreed. Even Paul McCartney said his favorite was "You Know My Name, Look Up the Number." Such a random tune, but a good one.

Her Majesty and Polythene Pam are two of my favorite "under the radar" picks, along with It's All Too Much

Its a decent song. The Beatles had a huge amount of decent songs. Yes they were hits when they invaded this country and I like a lot of the songs they have. From what I have listened to, they don't have that "one" song that sets them apart.

Not by me they're not, I consider them a pretty good group, and historically they had a monster impact on music as an industry, but as music they're just ok but not in my top 35 list, maybe in my top 50.

Yep, they don't have one, they have fifty or more.

I don't know if they're the best band ever but when I saw them on Ed Sullivan 2/9/64 I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

I've been making music ever since then!

If not the Beatles then who? and I'm not saying they are but you have to compare them against the other bands that could even be mentioned in the same league.

Right there with ya, old black and white TV and man what a memory, I think that has been a more vivid memory than Kennedy's assassination.

It's all generational, my dad thought all rock and roll was for simpletons, old man would put on the big band music and to be honest I really liked some of it but it was not my generations music, now if I listen to big band music I know how much talent those musicians had and I appreciate the complexity of the arrangements.

Not the "best ever", but "most influential".

Is it safe to say that without them, music would have been drastically different?

Zero question about this - the whole concept of a self-contained band (generally) who wrote all their own songs is generally attributable to the Beatles' wake - part of that is the media that surrounded them.

Not to say there weren't groups like The Beach Boys before - but the Beatles paved the way for virtually everything after them - if one recognizes that in American/European popular music, rock bands all follow the basic template of the Beatles (as a starting point) and solo artists - to varying degrees - follow the Elvis model (although some write their own stuff) - and Elvis came back to music largely in response to his feeling displaced by The Beatles - do we even have to do much more analysis than this?

Another thing I remind people about when they attempt to diminish The Beatles is that Love Me Do was in late 1962 and Abbey Road was recorded in 1969 - so, essentially, their catalogue was produced over a 7 year time span. Dozens of hits - 27 #1 songs in either the U.S. or U.K. - all in only 7 years.

I think overrated is a perfect word to describe the beetles but it's not as negative as the word has become. It's so casually used nowadays, but it doesn't mean they suck. I like some of their songs but their success is a product of their constant exposure. Better than KISS but overrated like them.
