I grew up in the 80s. Played music(guitar) as a teenager in the 90s mostly southern rock and blues. Looking back Ive come to realize that 80s pop is such an underrated genre. I think A-Ha's "Take on me" may be the epitome of 80s pop. Such a perferct song. That is all.

I've always been mesmerized by New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle and its basic chords and melody.

Great song for sure, but When In Rome's "The Promise" is my personal favorite 80s pop song.

That brings in some of the worst music in history though. Your example is fantastic, but listen to 80s on 8 for just a little while and you'll see what I am talking about.

I agree the 80s musack is god awful.

There’s some guilty pleasure songs in there tho.

My personal favorite is video killed the radio star

I love playing that any time I make changes to any of my music systems. There are some fantastic sounds in that song.

Killer tune and Kihn’s Vox Phantom guitar is the coolest.

The best thing about the ‘80s was that no one used that word to describe a song nor did they say “dropped” when referring to an album being released.

Split Enz - I Got You

Agreed and right near the top. And while I have many others ranked greater, I can see the OP's opinion of "Take On Me" as one of the great pop songs in that era.

Others?

Everybody Wants to Rule the World--Tears for Fears
Don't Dream It's Over--Crowded House (in that same Split Enz vein)
Who Can It Be Now--Men At Work

And being "Pop" I'm excluding rockers or cool funk/r&B, many great ones being released in the 80's.
