40 years ago, today...the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. The event memorialized by Gordon Lightfoot.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy

Written on an airplane after he heard the news. Great tune.

The song has special meaning to me as I spent my Summers on one of the Great Lakes, watched those ships go by as a kid just as the song came out. What an unbelievably well told story. Gordon Lightfoot did it justice. He captured the blue collar yankee maritime spirit better than anybody else could have because he was from that world and he understood it.

How long has it been since Kathy Smith sold him heroin and he wrote the masterful Sundown?

One of my favorite songs. Reminds me of the Seventies and my childhood when I hear it.

Fantastic song. Don't think I'll ever tire of hearing it, still is haunting. Spent a couple summers on the Great Lakes as a kid.
