I was wondering the same thing.

I'm 20, maybe I'm a weirdo but the narrative of her music just doesn't click with me.

Yeah, and all of my friends listen to Taylor Swift, some keep it secret. I don't give a shite, I listen TSwift and blare it and sing the words!

People that judge just make me laugh because I wouldn't change my taste in music for anything, I'll also listen to Demi Lovato to Maroon 5 to Kid Cudi to Blink 182 to August Burns Red to Lorde to Avicii.

Why? This is the music played at fun college parties. This is the type of music that gets played at fun college bars. This is not the type of music that gets played at weird, smoke-filled hipster bars. Thats where the music you champion gets played.....I would think if theres something to embarrassed about, its that you admit to listening to self-indulgent artists rather than the fun stuff that you'll hear on great nights.

Look, most of the bands and albums I enjoy would be consistent with the consensus on this board. Favorite band is guided by Voices, favorite album of the last few years is Chrvches, one of my all time favorite albums of all time is In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. I just don't understand why that stuff is cool and not the stuff that people listen to in fun social circles.

I fully understand that pop music can be bullshite and annoying when it gets famous. But it is possible, and in fact probable, that a great piece of work will get done in this genre every now and then. 1989 is that.

Hipsters slobbered all over Beyonce's album. She got rave reviews from most outlets, including from the usual hipper than thou sites. If we're gonna slam hipsters, let's at least slam them for their actual beliefs.

You are being dishonest and you know it. Hipster-frequented sites might give her good reviews in order to seem open-minded to all types of music. The people who go to Northgate bars do not like Beyonce.

Weird isn't fun? And are you arguing that Neutral Milk Hotel isn't fun? Because we most own different copies of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, which is a pretty fun album. I mean, the guy plays the saw for godsakes. I think the horn parts can be downright joyous (ok, some of the album is also quite introspective, but the idea something needs to have a drum machine on it to be fun is a total anathema to me)

Maybe you just have a limiting definition of fun. I kinda like sitting in smoke-filled bars with lots of alcohol. What's not to like? (Though where are these smoke filled bars now that smoking is banned in so many establishments?)

As for being dishonest... I can only go by their actual words. "Hipster" outlets DID praise Beyonce and are currently praising Swift (to a lesser extent). I can think of no better evidence of an outlet's beliefs than their actual output. But if you have insight into how they are all just lying to us in some giant con to be even more hip, then I guess that's cool. I'm not that concerned with that level of conspiracy. I tend to take a review at face value. Why on earth would someone lie about whether they liked an album or not?

ETA: For the record, I went to Beyonce's last show in Dallas (without Jay-Z). It was fun.

As I said, I love Neutral Milk Hotel. Or rather In the Aeroplane Over The Sea because they don't have much other output. But I have never once had more fun at a party because I was familiar with their material. If I go to a bar with a bunch of college kids at it, I'm gonna have more fun if all of the songs are ones that I have listened to and know. That's just the way it is. Ya'll should try it. I used to be the same way about not liking pop music. Then I realized I was being too much of an elitist about it rather than maximizing my enjoyment listening to music.

Eh, I guess you can call it a troll in that I knew it would be an attacked opinion. I 100% believe it though. And I think its silly that the Music Board ignores the most popular albums of the year. If I can convince one person to give the album a try, they might like it. Plus, y'all can let all your anger about pop music out through poignant belittlement. So I would hardly say this thread is a waste of time.

Well, you probably find that most people that love to talk about music are not going to love simple. radio friendly, pop music... Whats there to discuss... people at fun parties and bars like it??

I think it has its place in the world and I don't begrudge anyone for listening to what they like.. some people just want something they can move to, simple as that... fair enough..

then you have clearly never been drinking with Jeff Mangum. And how is the "party standard" any sort of standard of the quality of music? I find that I enjoy a party regardless of the quality of the playlist. A good party usually has cool people and alcohol. Food optional. I've been to great parties with no music whatsoever and terrible parties with really cool playlists. This is the single most bizarre standard ever concocted for the quality of a record.

I mean, what raging a-hole storms out of a party because the host is playing a song they don't like? "THIS IS bullshite! HOW DARE YOU DOUCHENOZZLES PLAY JOURNEY?! I'M A FOREIGNER FAN FOR LIFE! JUKE BOX HERO! PISTOLS AT DAWN!"

I like plenty of pop music. As mentioned above. I like Beyonce. I have not heard Taylor Swift's album, so I have no opinion on it either way.

Absolutely agree with you But notice I didn't start the thread talking about that because I absolutely agree with your first sentence there. I understand why people wouldn't like it. I don't understand why they think they have an objective higher ground to stand on of it being better. Comparing music is so objective and the few things that can maybe be objective (experience/resume of the production team, budget, etc) are in favor of pop music. I understand that there are intangibles that less popular albums have(less restriction on the sound, etc), but I just think its funny that people pull out what they think are trump cards(like Beatles) as if they are backing it up with anything besides their taste.

Anyone who doesn't like it can skip this thread. I promise doing so won't cause the board to be overrun by pop music discussion. I personally wish that the Music Board would have a thread every now and then discussing important albums. I don't begrudge them for not but I just provided a thread about it for anyone who was looking through with an open mind on the fence about giving the album a shot.
