yep. it's right up there with dark side of the moon and sgt pepper.

but yeah, I think stereogum has jumped the shark a bit promoting taylor swift. it's like it's super edgy to like radio pop now or something.

I mean, that's a bit of an overstatement. An album doesn't have to be GOAT level (like your two examples) to be important in a given year. Like Tom says in his article, the songs from this album will dominate pop radio for the next two years. That does make it an "important" album for better or worse.

I kind of like the whole embracing of pop music thing as it's pretty representative of the dichotomy in which I live. When we're in the car with the family, we'll move between pop radio singalongs then into different territory like Phosphorescent, Gregory Alan Isakov, Mutual Benefit, War on Drugs, Band of Horses, etc...

I don't really have a problem with pop music other than the fact that some songs become so overplayed that I have to change the station immediately when they come on.

it's commerce (a product) vs art IMO

when people are making music for the sole purpose of it being in a commercial I don't care for it.

The Beatles were "fluff pop radio" in 1966 bro.

What the frick is wrong with well crafted songs, strong melodies and solid vocals?
I mean, shite-there are 400 million Americans and there isn't room for Taylor Swift?

If anything, as traditional song structure is being replaced by the mind-numbingly repetitive hook, we should be praising anybody who goes back to the well to bring the young generation back in with actual songs and people who actually play instruments.

(EDIT-ok-I just watched a Taylor Swift video. Maybe I'm horribly wrong.)

Why would assume its not? Taylor isn't a flavor of the week. She's climbed head and shoulders above her peers in an era with WAAYYYY more resources going into the industry than PF/Beatles time. You understand this album might go platinum by weeks end? something nobody has been able to do ALL YEAR.

Pink Floyd is one of my 3 favorite bands of all time. Dark Side isn't even a top 2 album of their's, IMO. But I'm way more of a Waters fan than Gilmour, so thats probably why. But y'all are like Peej. Its not really unreasonable to think that the best album of the last decade would be the best of all time. I'm not saying this is. Just pointing out the fallacy of thinking old things are necessarily better.

Yeah, you know nothing about Taylor Swift then. I don't like her as a person. Think she is very prudish and un-relateable. But she is so far from the Katy Perry-esque person that I can tell you are envisioning her as.

What? You brought up the comparison. What do you want me to say? I don't like the Beatles and I love Pink Floyd. I think the Beatles are a "cool" band to like but my experience has been that if you look at peoples ITunes playlist, self-proclaimed Beatles fans don't really enjoy listening to their music that much.

So, IMO, Pink Floyd>Taylor Swift>Beatles. You seem to have a bad understand of statistics. Theres probably more people since 2000 with enough exposure and resources to get an album out there than all people pre-2000 combined. I think its stupid to compare albums across eras and genres in such an objective way, but if you are gonna bring it up...... I think its naive (probably stemming from a bad understanding of statistics) to think that the best album from an objective sense would come from 1970.

Could happen. But unlikely. Probably just your tastes. Or you haven't even listened to 50% of the albums being compared here. Or both.

No. I'm saying that its unreasonable for you to assume its not without listening when it is doing unprecedented things (probably going Platinum in 1 week when Beyonce or any other pop artist couldn't in 10 months.) The best album has to come from some year. Ruling out albums that are the most successful of the year by a massive margin is stupid.

See, this is exactly my point. I don't know if you live in Liverpool or something, but no, they aren't played at parties. What songs do you think are played at parties? Cover bands play them alike because those are the type of people who love the Beatles. But no, I can't remember a party where somebody's played Beatles.

But thats beside the point, thats just kind of my opinion on that. Haven't done a scientific study. I don't get why you are in such disbelief. I think Taylor Swift is one of, if not the, best musicians of the last 10 years. I think the Beatles were meh. They are pretty comparable in terms of general consensus. So i don't know what grounds you think you are objectively right on. That more people who hold your opinion get laid less?

Oh lawd the popularity argument. Platinum in a week, eh? Well, in that case, let me show you the GOAT musician; a music video with a billion+ views.
