Fox is moving forward with the X-Men spinoff, The New Mutants, and has hired The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone to helm the picture. According to Deadline, Boone will co-write the screenplay with Knate Gwaltney (Kidnap), and Simon Kingberg and Lauren Shuler Donner, the stewards of the X-Men movie franchise, will produce.

The New Mutants was created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, and first appeared in December 1982. According to Wikipedia, the original team consisted of Cannonball, Sunspot, Wolfsbane, Karma, Dani Moonstar, and Professor X. Since then, the team—like all other X groups, has had a rotating roster, and it will be interesting to see which mutants Boone chooses to use.

Kinberg tells Deadline, “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.” This makes me wonder about how a post-Apocalypse team will work out. It looks like the main X-Men franchise is going to lose its older actors and replace them with a younger cast, so I’m curious to see how they’ll have different tone since Deadline specifically states that New Mutants is a spinoff, not a continuation of the main X-Men movies. In other words, don’t expect Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) to be main characters in New Mutants.

well the main character in X-Men books, Cyclops, has yet to be the main character in the half a dozen X-films already, so why would this be any different?

Fox will probably make this team centered around Olivia Munn and Cable.

Would be cool, especially Speedball who is one of my favorite B heroes.

However, I wish I could see an overall plan from Fox. Either get in the universe building game or stay in the single narrative/sequel game. I can't tell which they are doing.

The New Mutants weren't cool until Cable started leading the team/Rob Liefeld started drawing them.

You have bad opinions and I hope you feel bad

(Yes, I know you're kidding, but some things we shouldn't joke about. Liefeld is the worst thing to ever happen to comic books)

You didn't think that in 1990 though. Sure, he eventually started drawing thighs in ridiculous proportions to calves, and became a head case, but that guy was as hot as an artist could be for a little while.

The New Mutants weren't cool until they were changed into X-Force.

The New Mutants were always cool, but got cooler when Bill Sienkiewicz started drawing them.

The Skienkiewicz New Mutants run is my favorite artwork in comics. That's what got me to accept different drawing styles from the old "standard" look.

Should be interesting to see what direction they go with this. Would love to see Cable in it though

Actually, I did. Liefeld and MacFarland made me stop collecting comics for over a decade. The damage they did to the field was incalculable. I liked the writers, and that's when Claremont got forced out. Crappy art, terrible stories, a generally dumbing down of the medium... yeah. I quit.

This guy gets it. What an amazing run. The Warlock/Cypher stuff was so damn cool. And was everything X-Force and the later knockoffs were not.

Yaay I get to post the pic of what Chris Evans would look like if Rob Liefeld was involved in the MCU.

as a kid, even I could see how hollow the Leifeld Xforce comics were. Was not a fan, when all my friends thought they were the shite.

Same.

I preferred the Lobdell/Bachalo Generation X stuff over Leifeld's XForce

Aren't we like the same age? I wasn't nearly the elitist at thirteen that I am now. Even at a tender age, you were ahead of your time.

ONLY Ron Perlman can play Cable. The resemblance is uncanny.
