The Avengers was entertaining, but it's not high art by any means. It's just a film that knows how to keep you entertained, and that's it. There's no real heart or soul to it, which I hope the sequel has and what I think disqualifies it from being in the conversation with this movie.
Point about depth is true and the acting in DOFP is superior, Avengers though was a visceral movie going experience for me. We all have our opinions, I loved all 3 of the movies discussed here.

The Avengers was a fantastic experience, it had spectacle, it was funny, it was entertaining. A great blockbuster, phenomenal comic book movie.
To me, DoFP is a great movie. No, it's not perfect, but it's elevated past being just a comic book movie. It and First Class are closer to TDK than they are to The Avengers. All of them are good, and I'd recommend any of them.

It was so good that it actually made two other shitty movies (possibly three) tolerable by proximity.

Does the movie hold up for a comic book fan?

Depends on the fan. If you're the type that still hasn't forgiven Singer for casting a tall Wolverine and for not going with the original five X-Men, then you'll probably hate that this movie continues the trend.
But if you can let that go and just enjoy seeing alternate versions of the X-Men on screen, it's a great superhero movie.
I've never been a fan of the NEW X-Men, so the changes in appearance and continuity from comics to movies never bothered me.

Just saw it. A very good flick, but it left a fricking lot of questions lingering...and not in the cliffhanger way.
This.
In terms of X-Men films it's on par with First Class, right behind X2 and in front of X1. It's very good.
But it has more than a few problems that just keep it from being pure awesome. I felt it dragged significantly in the middle too. A lot of wasted chances, but that's par for Singer, and has more to do with source material than execution.

I thought this board deemed Brian Singer a horrible director? What happened?

If you read DoFP last week, and you're a stickler for adhering to the book, then I'm not sure. If you're like me, read it over twenty years ago, and only remember the broad strokes, then it's very well done/changes didn't bother me nearly as much as I thought they would.

I'll never forgive him for turning Mystique into a scaly, nudist activist.

Just came out of it. I fricking loved it. Very arguably the best comic/hero movie to date.

Meh. I enjoyed it but I don't see why everyone is raving about it.

+1 also his use of Cyclops was absolutely pathetic.

I put it with first class. Very good movie. Avengers is still#1, but this is the best superhero movie since the avengers.

I liked it a lot, although I admit I had more fun watching Spider-Man 2. It was such a heavy movie that I don't have any urge to rewatch it.
