Would you watch a D&D based TV show

If they did it well (think GoT) with famous characters, locals, and monsters throughout the D&D lore. Would you watch or do you think it would be too nerdy?

I'll give anything a chance if it's good. D&D could make for a long standing, deep and intriguing show, so yeah I would.

That's my thoughts. I mean the stories are already there and many of them are really really good.

Not really. Just to see how D&D wrote it would be fricking boring.

Dragonlance: Champions of Krynn and Death Knights of Krynn would be a good start

it was one of my favorite shows as a kid

I would watch it as long as it wasn't campy. I'm talking zero "camp."
Treat it seriously, and the audience will take it seriously. People thought GoT would be too nerdy. Clearly it isn't.

Depends on what it is based on
Dragonlance
Forgotten Realms
Random D&D made up out of thin air
Salvatore is their bestselling author and probably best world creating author. If he was on board with his characters I would be all in. Love to see the Companions of the Hall on the small screen.

I think I would theme it in the Forgotten Realms and just call the show "Waterdeep."
Have it be about the factions that vie for power in the big city of Waterdeep. That way you can keep the majority of the show urban, focus on character development, with not as many locales to follow... and occasionally you follow characters going on adventures out into the world.

That cartoon was the best. That would make a good family friendly live action movie. Kind of like The Goonies except the adventure takes place in a D&D setting.

It all depends on the writing. There's plenty of brilliant world building, lore, characters, and settings already established. They just need to write in good characters, plot, and hire decent actors.
For something slightly tangential, check out Critical Role on the streaming Twitch channel "Geek & Sundry". I've post on it before:
It's a group of professional voice actors who are real life friends. About three years ago they decided to play a game of D&D for one of the group's birthday party (he had played as a kid). They had so much fun that they continued to play. About two years ago they mentioned it to Felicia Day who was just starting Geek and Sundry. She asked them to let her make their weekly game a show. They didn't think it would be popular (who wants to watch a bunch of nerdy arse voice actors sitting around playing Dungeons and Dragons?". Two years later it's gotten a HUGE following and is incredibly fun to watch.
Because they're all actors, they REALLY role play well. And the DM, Matt Mercer, is a goddamn genius. I highly recommend you checking it out. All of the episodes are on youtube and the Geek and Sundry site. (I'd link but I am blocked at work).
Seriously, it's crazy how entertaining this show is. The voice actors are SO damn good at improv. They have been playing as friends for a long time so they know each other's characters well enough to anticipate and feed off each other's actions. They have all gone through some great story arcs and the world and campaign that Matt has created is just fricking awesome.
Granted, they're not the best technical players, especially early on. They don't always know what their characters can do, how new spells work, rules etc. And they play a house rules version of 5th edition that's a little different, but actually better in most ways in my opinion.
I know it sounds overwhelming to think of watching all that past content, but believe me, it's some damn good stuff.

D&D (for me anyway) is one of those things that, if you're not into it, isn't for public consumption.
And I say this as someone who belongs to multiple nerd church denominations.

I already do. It's called Critical Role.
It's a bunch of nerdy arse voice actors playing D&D. Good times.

I am. It's Kraken time! I'm driving to houston for the baseball games tonight, so depending on how late I make the drive I'm going to tune in. If not, I'm going to watch the VOD on my drive back Sunday. Stoked!
*edit* oh snap I just noticed your name. Tary is where it's at though.

Sweet man. Good to see another Critter on here.
Tary is about the best replacement for Scanlon I could have ever dreamed of.
Now that I'm caught up I try to watch live on Thursday nights until the break. I catch the rest on VOD over the weekend.
I'm hoping the cast will come to a Con somewhere within reasonable driving distance sometime soon. I'd love to say hi and get something signed.

Absolutely. Do you play D&D? I DM for a group of friends and have been for ~10 years. Fixing to start up a Shadowrun game shortly.

Yep. I started playing back in the late 70's when it first came out and I was in middle school. I grew up in Central (Baton Rouge) and played with school and neighbor friends.
I stopped playing after college but recently discovered some guys and gals I work with play. They asked me to join the game and I've been playing with them for about 2 years. I took over as DM last summer and I've really had a blast. I converted them over from old school AD&D to 5th edition and I've tried to add a lot of the cool stuff Matt does to our game. I'm using a tablet with an app called DMDJ for music and sound, connected to a blue tooth speaker. I've made some pretty elaborate maps and props depending on the situation their in, and they are really digging it.
I've never played Shadowrun, is it a module or a "world"?
Do you play in BR?
