Shadowrun is a separate game system. It's d6 based. Essentially it's a dystopian world in the not too distant future where technology is enhancing, or harming the world depending on your viewpoints. The world is ran by mega-corporations and you as shadowrunner are a broke, underground 'criminal' whom will be paid to do the morally questionable work for these corporations.
It's been around since the late 80's and they're currently in their fifth edition as well.

overwhelming? heh the first episode is 3+ hours long and there's 80 something episodes.. just a bit

That's crazy, I wouldn't be surprised if we knew some of the same folks.
I started watching it at lunch everyday since I usually eat at my desk. You'd be surprised how quickly you can tear through them. I also have listened to them on my drive to work since my commute is about 45 minutes.
I know it's not for everyone, but if you are in to D&D and want to see some incredible role playing and story telling, it's worth it.

Yes I'd give it a shot. I really enjoy well made (GOT/LOTR) fantasy movies and shows..
