GG looks great as WW so I hope the rosier reviews turn out to be accurate. The line about revolutionary for women did smell like someone who just lacks normal perspective - and made me wince when I read it again.
There are plenty of prominently featured female leads in action or comic book movies. WW has been a cultural icon for decades. And the mythology upon which her origins are loosely based is literally thousands of years old.

Very few in GOOD comic book movies. You have had Supergirl, Catwoman, and Elektra. All three were terrible movies.

And once again...Catwoman and Elektra are NOT Superheroes, they are villains and anti-heroes. Supergirl was the first and only film to feature a female superhero, and that was over 30 years ago.

What a ridiculous argument. Seriously. Grow up, Peter Pan. Count Chocula.

But they are comic book movies, are they not? If the characters can be found on the pages of comic books then they are comic book movies. So therefore my original point still stands.

It's not ridiculous. From the hundreds of butthurt tears of grown men(debateable) crying about making Batman a killer and Superman letting people die, the very idea of what makes a hero has been front and center of the criticism and conversation of the DCEU. You're ridiculous.

Ha!
A) I don't give a flying frick how they've butchered characters. DC has made shitty movies because Zach Snyder is a shitty director. I couldn't care any less about them making a Wonder Woman movie. The DCEU is dead in my mind. Take a flamethrower to it. If they want to make 100 comic movies starring women, go for it, but don't give me this nonsense about it being revolutionary.
B) Here's your quote:
quote:
It is the first female lead in a modern comic book film, it's a DCEU film, it is a revolutionary character and is getting praised.
First, you're argument is entirely baseless. It is NOT the first modern comic book film with a female lead. Both Freaux and I disproved they. Multiple comic movies have starred women in the lead role in the past. Now you're trying to split hairs because they aren't "superheroes," but in order to do that you have to make up what a superhero is to carve out heroes that are anti-heroes. Except the list of anti-heroes is long and could include fricking Batman. Certainly includes Wolverine. These guys aren't superheroes because they're anti-heroes? Really?
Which brings me to the point: how is it revolutionary to have a female led comic book film? It's been done numerous times in the past, from lesser known franchises like Lucy to major franchises like Catwoman and everything in between, including a depiction of what I think could certainly be categorized as a superhero in katniss everdeen. But taking that aside, you're simply incorrect. It isn't revolutionary in any way.
Which leads to the inevitable conclusion that the use of this language is designed, intentionally or otherwise, to distract from the film itself and pander to an audience that is so enraptured by and wrapped up in the notion of "progress" that it does exactly what you do: ignores facts. It is also designed to rouse anger in what I called earlier the "anti-sjw" crowd. Certainly some of what you see in this thread could be attributed to that sentiment. I do not know. But your argument is, to put it bluntly, ludicrous. This is not revolutionary. This has been done before. And to say otherwise is both insulting to those films and, frankly, a clear inability to separate one's own desires for a film from reality.
You can keep trying to pivot but at the end of it all you know that Freaux and I are correct. The use of this language is troubling at best and pandering at worst.

Summer movie season is here with the first broflake melting.

A lot of us will. Because the casting once again looks good enough to make it look good in the previews.
FWIW if we are going to talk about revolutionary movies with female action leads we really have to at least mention Alien. It still holds up. SW is obviously the star and the movie can be enjoyed as a straight action sci fi horror movie... Or even as an extended metaphor for female heroism in the face of male violence. That was revolutionary. What we are hoping for from WW is probably derivative in a non-perjorative sense. Just a solid comic book movie with a comprehensible plot would be a real success.

I want it to be good, but have a feeling it's going to fall flat on its arse.
I'm less confident by the day. Hopefully they just reboot the whole fricking universe after JL flops. Sucks because I was excited to see Affleck's Batman's universe.

I'm sure by the time this board gives it a cinematic colonoscopy they'll have convinced themselves it's THE WORST MOVIE EVER. Meanwhile, half-assed efforts like The Winter Soldier or cheesy dreck like Guardians will continually get ball-washed.

After reading the tweets, all I can envision is the push for Ghostbusters because wimmenz. I see the same thing going on here

The irony in this post...

It's a great movie, I saw it a week ago and I won't give any spoilers, but I will say it's the best DC movie yet. Gal Gadot is the hottest B on the planet and she is Wonder Woman, she embodies her! Great special X's, and it captures the feel of WWI, it's not WWII like some people think it is when comparing it to Captain America. It's funny though because I always thought Chris Pine would be Captain America, he looks like he could be the guy right out of the comics, but Chris Evans has done a great job.
