Why the general hate for X-Men: Apocalypse?

I was surprised how much I enjoyed it given the beating it took in reviews.
Maybe it's because I had really low expectations, but I thought it was quite good. Nothing groundbreaking, but an entertaining flick nonetheless. I mean, all the X-Men flicks are the same thing at this point (Professor X: There's good in you!., Magneto: LOL no.)
What did the board think, and why?

Because Apocalypse sounds like Will Ferrel yelling in a character sketch

Standard issues with a big all powerful badass. In the comics, the character is introduced o ver years and there are lots of attempts to defeat him or wear him down.
A movie tries to force all of that in 90 to 120 minutes.

ive enjoyed all the xmen movies except X3 (though DOFP was very meh), but Apocalypse was bad. Watched it on the plane back from London last week and was very disappointed.
spent too little time with too many characters to where you didn't give a shite about anyone. Love OI but he didnt work as Apocalypse. you pretty much need a giant CGI Apocalypse with a badass voice, not what we got. None of the non-Magneto Horsemen were interesting (they have a combined like 15 lines) and it's the same old bullshite with Magneto's storyline.
you keep waiting for the movie to pick up and it never does. the climax is very lame too. the ham-fisted shoving of JLaw down our throats is awful as well. mystique is fricking worthless but they have to bump her role up because shes famous. just dont cast her.
they need a new screenwriter, Kinberg has lost his touch with these last two. some fun setpiece moments like the others, but it didnt have the charm of the previous Singer/Vaughan movies
nowhere near as Batman v Superman, fwiw. that almost made me hijack the plane and fly it into the ocean to kill myself

Message board geeks were also hard on it because it came out right after Deadpool, but didn't have characters dropping F bombs like super cool funny Deadpool did.

the antagonist was very lackluster
I read the comic as a kid in the 80's and early 90's. Watched the cartoon
granted, I never picked up a comic again after that, but I do have some sense of how Apoc should be portrayed in comparison to the rest. He was 1/10th as intimidating as he should've been.
The horsemen at the beginning of the movie were waaaaaaay more interesting characters than Magneto, Storm or Psylocke

I thought the same thing. Put it off and finally watched it and really enjoyed it.

As others have said, Apocalypse wasn't even the most important character in the movie despite it being named after him. In fact the order seemed to be Mystique, Magneto, Professor X, Quicksilver, and then Apocalypse.
It also threw too many characters who had too little to do. Marvel has proven that you can load a movie and still give them all time to shine. Plus you had such a large cast and still had to shoehorn in Wolverine.
I know it was popular, but that Quicksilver scene was so forced. They just rehashed the first appearance. It would be like if the next Avengers movie rehashed the airport scene.
My biggest gripe is that it is so far from the comics that the movie really just needed the be called "Loosely based on the X-Men comics"

Age of Apocalypse is one of the most beloved storylines in the X-Men comics and the movie took a big pile of steaming shite on it.
It was an ok movie, just wasn't up to what people wanted that enjoy the source material.

I enjoyed it, for me it was the best comic book movie of the year. I know that's not saying much I'm really looking forward to Dr. Strange thou.

In general I have a problem with Magneto's power varying from film to film to fit the plot. A plexiglass prison wouldn't contain a Magneto that can rip buildings out of the ground from across the globe (can be explained by Apocolypse's influence, but does that fade?). Also, he has quite a bit of aging to do in the next 15 years in-universe to match Sir Ian in the original.

It had Olivia Munn in it. Any director that says cast her is just going to make a lot of other bad decisions.

I didn't hate it, but I am tired of Mystique, who has been the star of all these movies despite being a minor character in the comics.
The Apocalypse from the dream sequence should've been how he was depicted throughout the movie. His powers were uneven. In one instant, he can kill people with just his mind. Next thing he is recruiting characters for some reason and then can't defeat them when they turn on him.
I did enjoy seeing wolverine go nuts. That's how he should've been throughout the movies.
