Big Bang Theory is pretty much on the same intellectual level as Two and a Half men they just use faux nerdy jokes.

t's Two and a Half Men with Nerds. Especially now. 90% of the jokes are lame sex jokes. It's always been a very mediocre show, but they used to try to actually make fun of things like Star Wars, but they don't really anymore.

This. BBT's nerds in no way act like actual nerds. trust me, I am one. They don't resemble me or anyone I know. The show doesn't play to nerds... it's just window dressing for bawdy humor. which is fine, and I don't hate BBT as much as most, but it's certainly not very interesting. It's fine if it's on and I think it has its moments, but its not must-watch TV or anything.

HIMYM has my favorite literary device, the unreliable narrator, so it sucks me in. That's a personal thing, though. It doesn't make it automatically "better", just more appealing to me. though I think the quality of writing is higher and the cast is superior.

How I Met Your Mother, while also now in syndication, has just never grabbed the casual viewer like Big Bang, Friends, Seinfeld, Raymond or any other widely syndicated show. The hate is the natural backlash to mainstream, which seems to always be a thing to a certain group of people.

Man, I'm sick and tired of this line of argument. "Oh, you just hate anythign mainstream." That's completely BS, mainly because HIMYM is pretty f'n popular. It's on CBS and has had ratings to justify a nine season run. It's about as mainstream as you can get. The difference is popularity between the two shows is marginal.

I swear, the next person to mention "hipsters", should be punched in the taint repeatedly. It's such a lazy argument. If you think BBT is better show, argue for its quality, but spare me the strawman of "people hate things that are popular." Maybe that's true for a small subset, but most of us are adults and don't give a crap about that stuff.

You're right. I like BBT, but I just started watching it a few months ago on TBS. I think the first few seasons are a lot better than the newer stuff. The writers have decided all the males need a female, one of which is annoying and not funny. Plus they have done what a lot of writers do. They have streamlined all their characters and made them very one dimensional. Scrubs was perhaps the worst offender of this I can ever remember.

I still watch them and enjoy them. But they aren't on the same level as Frasier. Whose episodes I can see dozens of times and not get tired of them.

We'll have to disagree on that. I've spent too much time (years) on this board and the music board not to see the hipster effect.

Eh. The ten or so episodes I watched had me not giving a crap about anyone else except Barney. All the others were forgettable.

HIMYM is more of a chick show that boyfriends and husbands get roped into, then natural affinity develops on the boyfriend/husband side once they get invested in the characters.

Big Bang is a solid show but doesn't have the broad appeal of HIMYM, mainly due to stereotypes around nerd culture. It's a show that has to overcome bias right off the bat to get people to buy in.

Essentially, HIMYM is Friends.

Boom.

HIMYM just struck me as a chick show from day one and I gave it a season. Now I'll watch a few minutes of an episode here or there, but I never get intested in the characters like I should.

Me too. I think it's because Patrick Warburton is hilarious. Kate Hudson's brother annoys the shite out of me and it actually bothers me that his character is as dumb as he is. But I can watch Warburton and Megyn Price go back and forth any time.

Oh, come on. I like Adam. That's the character. He's just mainly oblivious.

Timmy is the one that gets on my nerves. I can do without him, but I guess he needed to be added to add to future story lines?

I like the show, i don't roll my eyes much..except the Indian kid and Blossom don't add anything, and I'd rather neither be on the show again.

If they are all PhD's(cept Howard) wouldn't they all be in their 30's? How old is Penny 22?

It got far less smart than it used to, it relies on sex jokes more often, and it stopped with the REAL references to nerd culture.

The nerd thing was played out after season 2. There is only so far you can go with a premise like that before you have to actually make the characters into 3 dimensional people and not a gimmick.

If they were still doing Moff Tarkin jokes by season 4 people would be bitching.

Yup. It's essentially Friends 10 years later with updated jokes and more resources.

Ross = Ted, Marshall/Lilly = Monica/Chandler, Barney = Joey, etc.

I have a feeling that it's just because The Big Bang Theory is directly competing against our beloved show, Community.

Both are 3 camera sitcoms. Both have laugh tracks (ohhhh the horror!). Both target the same audience.

Anybody have a better explination?

I like both and find them entertaining. HIMYM is getting long in the tooth, but I've actually enjoyed this season finally pushing the plot forward.

I love BBT. I like science, engineering, comic books, and hot blondes. Its my kind of show.

You only say that because an episode of Futurama was used to prove a mathematical theorem.

For real though, I forgot to mention Futurama as a show that celebrates nerd culture and being intelligent rather than make fun of it like BBT.

BBT at least used to be good, or didn't appear to suck right away.

HIMYM has always sucked, and has never been funny at all.

I feel like you haven't watched the show in a while. They are more than nerds now. They are people although I find Parson's character to be getting a little rediculous by now.

How is being compared to Friends a bad thing? Friends is a game-changing sitcom, and one of the very best casts in the history of TV. Sure, HIMYM is a modern Friends with a different framing device. That's a good thing.

I like Friends. I think it was a better show than Seinfeld.

also, why do people hate women so much? They are only 50% of the population. Why is a "chick show" inherently bad? Are you that insecure? And a chick can't enjoy stuff blowing up and a dude can't enjoy relationship drama? I mean, the undercurrent of misogyny of TV/movie criticism really bothers me. I'm not 8. I'm not grossed out by people kissing.

I disagree with you on this. But it's frustrating that I can't use the fact that it's been on for 8 seasons to justify my argument because of fricking Jim Belushi.

People are missing out on a great show right now with New Girl because of these type of issues.
