Maybe this topic has been discussed already but I was just curious why Hollywood doesn’t make western movies anymore. It’s one of my favorite types of movies.

Isn’t Yellowstone and 1883 huge right now?

But to answer your question, I think they just overdid it. Same thing will happen with superhero movies…. Eventually

The Western Genre seems to be in the middle of a resurgence right now. It may not be movies specifically, but there is a lot of content in that style right now.

You might also consider some shows that aren't strictly Westerns but might be similar enough for you to like, such as The Mandalorian on Disney+ and Warrior on HBOMax.

Westerns typically portray that most iconic of American male archetypes - the rugged individual. You can see why Hollywood does not favor that anymore.

Indians & Mexicans can't be portrayed as villains anymore in Hollywood. You also can't team up your lead with them without your lead being a white savior. So there goes half of your genre.

You are left with Lawmen vs Outlaws ...or Anti-hero Outlaws vs Corrupt Lawmen storylines.

And when you can't create a fresh enough script from those options, you end up with genre-mixed Cowboys vs Aliens/Androids.

They still make them but very few are worth a shite... I watched Old Henry and something Dog and both were disappointing. Old henry was OK just no action until the very end.
The last good westerns, in my opinion, were Unforgiven and Open Range.. and they are both pretty old.

Among other reasons, now every move has to be so over the top. CGI, massive explosions, nonstop action... Never needed any of that for the Duke to come in and kick some a** and save the day. Just a horse, a six shooter, and a sunset.

I really wouldn't want to watch a Michael Bay or Jerry Bruckheimer western.

The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs 2018
True Grit 2010
Deadwood 2019
Revenant 2015
Django Unchained 2012
Hostiles 2018
Meeks Cutoff 2011
Bone Tomahawk 2015
The Sisters Brothers 2018
Old Henry 2021

And then Killers Of The Flower Moon currently being shot. They are still out there just not in same abundance they once were. Fewer westerns but much more creative and diverse. Buster Scruggs was fantastic.
