That was an absolutely stacked year and category.
Tommy Lee Jones won but he probably gave the 4th best performance of the 5 nominees that year. Ralph Fiennes should have won for Schindler's List.

Political make-up award for the Malcolm X snub.

Yep. And Al Pacino's win that year was a make-up for all the times he had been snubbed, The Godfather Part II specifically.

Wasn't even nominated as a supporting role.

Al Pacino's performance in The Godfather Part II is my #1 all-time performance. I haven't seen a better one. The fact that he got beat out by Art Carney for Harry and Tonto really depresses me.

Was coming to post this. Just a brilliant and completely engrossing performance. One of my favorites.
John Goodman in Barton Fink should have won. I think he's spectacular in that role.

John Goodman has never gotten the respect he deserves. His role in The Big Lebowski is one of my favorite characters.

This is where politics kills the Oscars. A lot of people thought Russell Crowe should have beaten Kevin Spacey in 1999 for his performance in The Insider. So, in 2000, the Oscars gave Russell Crowe the award despite Tom Hanks having the superior performance in Cast Away. And when Crowe truly delivered in A Beautiful Mind, one of the best performances of the last decade, the Academy gave the Oscar to an inferior performing Denzel Washington.
So true. Very subjective, like the Heisman trophy most years.

Disagree. The Oscars got it right that year with Daniel Day-Lewis winning for My Left Foot, which some argue is his greatest performance.
