In that trailer Snoke said fulfill your destiny. I think it would be a mistake if he is the Emperor and they say he survived RTJ. Hopefully it was just a red herring.
I do think Rey may be a decedent of the Emperor though. In TFA she used two moves with a lightsaber that have only been used on screen by the Emperor. This would also explain why Luke said in the trailer he has only seen this raw power one other time.

frick it, can't figure out how to hide spoilers here, but this being a speculation one would expect theories and speculation.
My favorite so far,
That snoke was an imprisoned sith/Jedi from the old republic. A vampiric being that feeds off the essence of ultra powerful Jedi and was the one that essentially created the prophecy of the chosen one as a means of crafting the perfect life battery for himself.
What makes this cool if true, it could open up to a whole new trilogy based upon the Old Republic.

Here's an interesting guess.
Snoke is Darth Nihilus. After thousands of years, he's been able to sustain a corporeal body, but still has to drain the energy from force wielders.

would make sense, except for that light saber flashback that Luke left. Glasses chick yoda comes and says "that was luke's, and his father's before him, and now it calls to you"...that she comes from Luke side of the family tree.
My theory, only because I hated that his death was so anticlimatic....Snoke is Boba Fett after he was digested for a few years, he was able to get out somehow and has been planning his revenge ever since.

Would be a happy accident. Snoke is a vast improvement

Face is definitely human, has eyebrows. No eyebrows on Jar Jar. If you look at the face, the right side is just old and almost undamaged. The left looks like some horrific accident happened. FWIW, his hand is in the way of the mouth, and you can only see the facial structure, cheeks, forehead, eyes. No mouth.
Hmmm, I wonder, never read any spoilers so this is only a guess...
Kamino- home of the clones. Someone set up that deal for the troops- Palpatine, maybe? I mean in person.
If they made a special clone for Jango to have a kid, maybe they did the same for Palpatine. -> Snoke?
Also, Kenobi was there, got a walkaround tour.
Wonder if they got a genetic sample, and made a clone...
I forget the actual science, but did learn it once; female is the default gender, if I remember correctly. Might be easier to build a female from incomplete genetic material, than to build a male. -> Rey? Left in a pod, found and 'birthed'? That would make her straight-up Obi Wan II, without dilution from a non-Jedi mother.
Doubt it's both, but either could be possible, I guess.

I would love this. They could really bring the whole "power to cheat death" thing back full circle.
Just from some of the stuff I've read about the new books that are now considered canon, Snoke watched from a distance as the Empire rose and then crumbled and he knew of Palpatine and Vader well iirc. It makes sense.
There's also a theory out there that Snoke is the Grand Inquisitor from the Rebels series, if anyone follows that. Not sure how believable that would be though

It's going to be a huge letdown if it isn't:
SPOILERS
Plageius
Luke
Emperor
Or some other known entity.
I don't mind other theories, but someone new will just throw everything into question and be relatively boring.

Is it possible that Snoke is just Snoke?

Would be boring, and a ruse to get people clamoring. By hiding and being obscure you're automatically up the ante. Snoke is at the very least, something unique (either someone we know, a guise of someone we already see, or some machination that is unique), if it's just a character they misdirected around for no purpose, that would be terrible.

They would have to work at it for Snoke to just be the next bad guy on deck and not have it be lame.
He obviously didn't challenge the Emperor nor has he (that we know about) directly challenged Luke, even when Luke was a pretty novice Jedi.
