Currently watching Big and tried to think of the actors on the same level with the amount of range and classic movies he has been a part of. Tried putting Leo in that category which coincidently enough Catch Me If You Can is phenomenal with both of them.

What other actors play in movies that you could watch no matter what the story line just because they're in it?

A friend and I had this conversation a while back and we came up with Denzel Washington. Gary Oldman wad the only other name we could think that wad even close to their versatility.

Hanks hasn't done a comedy since LadyKillers in 04 since I won't include animated stuff....

Duck!

The board hates Hanks. They think Hanks is always playing Hanks no matter what role he is in.

Along with being a solid actor, he picks good projects to both act or produce.

He deserves Hall of Fame status for From Earth to the Moon and Band of Brothers, alone. The rest is gravy.

At his age now, idk if comedy is the best option anyways. I don't see him as the cliche dad joke type of character so I don't think a family comedy would work too great.

This board will follow a guy like SFP in a heartbeat.

To the OP, Keaton is the answer.

Possibly matthew mcconaughey, can hit action, drama and comedy.

Matt Damon could be in there with that.

Robin Williams too.

Off the top of my head, the only ones I would consider are Leo and Denzel. Maybe Gary Oldman too, but that's about it.

I don't see how someone apparently dislikes James Stewart. Apparently Rear Window isn't a classic thriller and Harvey isn't a classic comedy. He was that generation's everyman just like Hanks was the 80's-00's everyman.

Off the top of my head Forrest Gump and Castaway featured two very different characters that weren't even close to portrayed the same way.

I don't like the criticism. Think he plays similar roles in a movies of a guy in a leadership position and people think he just plays himself.

He's a very good actor. There are several others who are as talented.

Honestly - Hanks is better than the snobs think and not as good as the fanboys think. He was impressive in Captain Phillips and a solid actor. But there are at least a dozen that are better currently.

The difference between Hanks and Stewart is Stewart could play characters with a dark side. I don't believe he ever played an actual villain, but some of his characters could be edgy. Unless I'm misremembering, I don't think Hanks has ever done that.

Per Google, I think he played one villainous role, but to know this spoils the movie.

He was a bit creepy in Rope.

Maybe not but could Stewart pull of living in a women's apartment complex? I think not.

Plus you completely forget Hanks caused an uproar and D&D fear mongering amongst parents with his role in Mazes & Monsters.
