I'd have to go with Paul Thomas Anderson and Christopher Nolan.

Between them they have produced most of my favorite movies over the last 10 - 15 years.

Magnolia, Insterstallar, The Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood.

I'd put Wes Anderson up there pretty far as well, Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and Moonrise Kingdom are great.

I'm sure a lot of people will say Tarentino. While I love Pulp Fiction and Reservoir dogs, I think The Kill Bill series and to a greater extent, Django Unchained are overrated, even though I do like them.

If I had to choose just one I'd go with Paul Thomas Anderson.

Forgot about them, they are great. No Country for Old Men and The Big Lebowski are two of my favorites.

The only movie of his I've ever seen is Badlands, really liked it. I should check out more of them.

Surprised no one has mentioned Arnofsky yet, Black Swan, Requim for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Pi are all really good.

He's not the most consistent though, I thought the Fountain and Noah were pretty bad.

I like David Lynch and Michael Haneke a lot as well, but their stuff is really weird.

I'd start with Badlands and Days of Heaven.

I love all of them. I'd say just watch them in order:

Days of Heaven
The Thin Red Line
The New World
The Tree of Life
To the Wonder

Make sure you watch them in bluray. I own the Criterion Bluray editions of Days of Heaven/Thin Red Line. The New World is a thing of beauty on bluray.

But I'll say this: none of those films above are like Badlands. Everything above is filmed in more of an "artsy" style. It's not for everyone but I love his films.
