To be clear, I'm not saying there isn't an appeal, I've just never seen the show so I don't know what it is. I just watched the first episode, and it got me curious as to what about the series drives the cult following.

Is it that it's hilarious? The nostalgia factor? Feel good?

I trust I'll find out for myself if I keep watching, I'm just not sure I want to watch it if whatever it is that was so appealing about it to others is t going to be appealing to me.

It has really good characters, character development, writing, and acting. In format it is just your standard high school drama that centers around your typical coming of age themes and tropes, but it is really well put together. The issues are depicted in a real and relatable way. It's just a quality show.

Some of the best character development you'll ever seen in such a short time frame. Laugh out loud moments throughout and themes/stories that bring you back to your high school days no matter your generation. The characters feel real and they do things real people do. It's authentic and fun.

I wanted to call up damn near everyone I went to high school with after watching the whole series a few years ago. Seemed every episode had something that hit close to home. For instance, Nick's awkward courting of Lindsay... Yeah that especially.

No matter what they're saying, nobody liked it or claimed to like it until years later when the cast got famous. Now everyone likes it.

I never saw it until a couple years ago. Really enjoyed it for good writing and nostalgia factor as well.

It was pretty cool that I could recognize almost everyone from shows they were big in later.

An exception was Bill Haverchuck. Then I also made a late discovery of Party Down and saw Martin Starr in that, then Silicon Valley, etc.

When the Sylvia Rosen character showed up on Mad Men, I looked her up to see who the hot actress was. Surprise, surprise. Lindsay looking good.

This show was a gold mine of young talent.

It's not one of those shows that has universal appeal if you didn't see it already back in the 90s.

Some people can first-time view in 2017 and love it, but not everyone can. It's 50/50 I think.

100% this.

It's a good show. I have zero regrets whatsoever about having watched it and have nothign but good things to say about it. But it definitely gets a little overhyped simply due to the above. If the same exact show, with the exact same script and exact same lines, was made today with a no-name cast nobody would care.

Everyone thinks that they were a geek or a freak in high school. (Or thinks that the social clique that they did belong to was on the same level of unpopularity or popularity as the freaks or geeks.)

It is overrated for sure. It started off great, but you can tell by the end of it the storylines start unraveling, character behavior changes with every episode, and it just becomes a shoddy mess. Completely understand why it was cancelled.

How old are you?

F&G is a great recapturing of the late 70's/early 80's time. They do a good job of portraying kids as kids, not as Saved by the Bell actors. The stories are great, the characters aren't perfectly beautiful or perfectly smart. They're real.

I graduated from high school in 85. I lived those times. They nailed it.

So yeah, nostalgia along with great writing.

The scene when Segal finally auditions for the band is gut wrenching. I skip it when I watch the show.
