What was the reason for S7 of Parks & Rec only being 12 episodes?

The wife and I finally watched this on Netflix and were feeling it was the best they had been in a while. The episode where Leslie and Ron got locked in the room to work out their differences was one of the funnier ones we've seen. But we were crestfallen when got to 12 and realized that was it. We were somewhat suspicious at the few before where it was hard to see how they were going to extend this out an entire season with what they were doing with the characters (and we didn't bother to see how many episodes were actually listed).

I couldn't find any discussion on it online anywhere, so I was curious if it was a decision from the production staff saying "this is all we want to say with it, no need to go any further", or was it a case of that's all the cast would agree to do?

I liked how it ended, just wanted more.

They basically didn't know if they were coming back at all, so the end of Season 6 could have been the Series Finale. They got a small order from NBC to wrap things up (if I remember correctly).

Indeed. I enjoyed season 7 just fine but the ending of season 6 was a perfect series ending.

I though 12 was more than plenty for the final season. It felt like Aziz and Pratt kind of mailed in their performances. Maybe they were already ready to move on to their other projects.

Ratings were not great. They were given a half season and a January start for season 7. I think we even got 2 episodes a night a couple of times. It's like NBC was really trying to rush through those last few episodes.

They created a storyline in London so they could have an excuse to go to London to film because Pratt was there making Guardians of the Galaxy. He is much fitter, obviously, which they comment on in the show. He just says, "I stopped drinking beer."

yeah I thought the unity concert was actually a better finale vs the series finale.

Also during my recent re watch. I've started to think Parks & Rec>>>>The Office

Easily. The Office lost its focus and "quirk" and became just another sitcom a few seasons in. I lost interest.

It lost its heart without Steve Carell. They spent another 3 seasons trying to figure out what to do and never got it right, from trying Ed Helms at manager to trying James Spader to moving the team to Florida to bringing on that incredibly unfunny British bitch that nearly made me stop watching the show entirely. They even tried to do a near break-up of Pam and Jim and indicated Pam might cheat on Jim - probably the single biggest mistake they made in the entire series.

I still think at its peak The Office is the GOAT, seasons 2-3 were amazing. But if we're going by the entire body of work, parks was probably the better show.

I didn't need it to have heart. I loved the British one first and Gervais's David Brent (Michael Scott's counterpart) had zero heart and even more insecurity and incompetence. He was a far less sympathetic character but at least you knew what the show was about and it was just funny without obviously contrived standard sitcom drama. The American Office is a different show but it had that focus too for a while but lost it.

On that topic, that first season of P&R where Leslie Knope is essentially a female Michael Scott was terrible. I don't know why i kept watching but I'm glad I did. Considering she's a confident competent organized dynamo the rest of the series, it doesn't even fit. They should just scrap it from the canon and act like season two is the beginning.

I would put Scrubs and 30 Rock against them too. NBC has made some exceptional sitcoms - Seinfeld and Friends too.

My top 4 sitcoms - all of which I happily watch reruns of repeatedly - are (in no particular order):

30 Rock
Scrubs
The Office
Parks & Rec

No other show has made me laugh so much while also caring about the characters.

Nothing tops scrubs for me. It's in perpetual re-run state on Hulu. There's never "nothing to watch" at my house, since we can always watch scrubs.

I'm not trying to single you out specifically tGW, but I continue to be amazed that some people actually think this. I didn't watch P&R live and instead binged on netflix. I started maybe 6 months ago, idk..but it was before 7 came out. So I flew through 1-6 thinking that 6 was the last season, and I was a tiny bit pissed when (I assumed) the series had ended with 6.

**SPOILERS below regarding S6 finale**....

I watched the last few of 6 again when 7 was about to drop so it's still fresh on my mind. Just to recap people who may not remember....

We DO get some closure on some storylines. Tom's restaurant seems to be gaining steam, the concert goes well, and leslie takes a new national job. However, the last minute completely throws water on teh fire. We fast forward 3 years in the future and things are pandemonium. Leslie is barking very high level sounding orders to people and things seem to be chaos. A tuxedo clad Ben shows up and says "everyone is waiting downstairs in my office, let's hear what they have to say". They get on the elevator, ben asks leslie if she's ready and she says "not at all" then the doors close.

Really....that is what people say is a perfect ending? If we're talking real time (like S7 never existed) if you watched that you wouldn't be furious as an avid fan of the show? Who is waiting downstairs? Why is he in a tux? What do they have to say? Why are things so hectic for leslie? What media is she trying to quell?

Is a final 30 seconds chock full to the brim with unanswered questions really a fitting finale for a show of this caliber? I hardly think so. Hell, people crap on LOST for all of its questions but at least most got explained...this is the opposite. Everything is all good until the very end then theres like a hundred questions with no answers!
