Comic book superheroes have seen a recent resurgence onto the big screen. Many of these movies have gone on to be wildly successful.

Will video game movies ever get the same treatment? Many suffer from a poor script, B list actors, and a low budget. They seem handcuffed from the start to ever have any mainstream appeal.

Yet some have been financially successful, well received by fans, but not critically acclaimed.

There are some really great stories out there. What will it take to see something that rivals say Iron Man?

Here are some examples:
Tomb Raider (2001): $167 million

Prince of Persia (2010): $135 million

Mortal Kombat (1995): $104 million

Resident Evil (2002): $69 million

Doom (2005): Lost $4 million

Super Mario Bros. (1993): Lost $21 million

Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter (which you left off) both kick arse.

I watched Mortal Kombat a couple weeks ago. Johnny Cage is still a badass if you are wondering.

I thought the FPS view in Doom was pretty cool too.

Every single video game movie ever made would have been exponentially better, if done by me.

Video games are obviously typically built around game play and not story. I think that most of the time video games don't really have a story worth telling in movie form. I don't think that Mario Bros had enough of a story to make a movie as an example. Neither did Doom. Really of the movies that you listed, the only thing that redeems them is that they are so bad that they are good in spots. And Angelina Jolie in tight clothes.

Personally, I'm a big enough geek to think that movies for some of the Final Fantasy stories would be worth while. I would just rather that they don't bring Titus back. Give me some more Sephiroth and Cloud.

Mortal Kombat is a fun movie, but it really doesn't have any substance.

It was as if they copied bloodsport, but added in a the game characters.

Neither of which have great reviews.

I wonder if Legend of Zelda could be converted into a movie franchise?

I agree. Many of the movies try to stay true to the game and come off campy (Mortal Kombat). Others go in a different direction and piss a lot of people off (Super Mario - terrible idea for a movie regardless). Prince of Persia was a game centered around a game play style to rival Assassins Creed, and thus I think the story suffered.

Max Payne was centered around a dark back story, had decent actors, but was not received well.

I think a game like Mass Effect could do really well. It is built around a huge story, and has a lot of great characters. The game used tons of amazing cuts scenes that often felt like you were playing an interactive movie.

There are rumors that it will be made into a live action feature, but I worry about it being taken seriously.

There hasn't been a single good video game movie.

Also, Uwe Boll is one of the worst directors ever and how the hell did he get the movie rights to so many games?

Assassin's Creed could be a good movie if done correctly.

I didn't mind the first two Resident Evil films. They were alright and did a decent job capturing Racoon City. The next two were just movies with the Resident Evil name and characters from the game make appearances.

How?

Prince of Persia could have been much better if it hadn't been done by Disney.
