Footfall by Niven and Pournelle, though I am more of a fantasy guy this book was good.
I concur with Black Company and the Mongol Chronicles as we'll.
Reading 1st Malzan book now it is excellent but seems hard to convert.

Slightly off topic, but I'm shocked there hasn't yet been a Voltron or new He-Man movie yet, considering how well Transformers and GI Joe have done and the 80s nostalgia those movies would garner.
