Didn't Leno have like a 12-18 month contract when he took over? That's hardly firm, that's pretty much up for grabs. Not exactly the same as Leno knowing 5 years in advance Conan was taking over, but he was nice enough to give him 6 months.

I think Leno had two years left. NBC and Letterman did serious damage to Leno's career (as well as NBC) by flirting while Leno was still under contract. The flirtation included buying Leno out and showing him the door just into his tenure, so it was hardly an innocent negotiation.

His sandbagging of Conan was pathetic. Dude agreed to step aside. Comes back with the shite Jay Leno show at 9 which destroys the lead-in for not just Conan but NBC affliates local news. Then when Conan struggles to overtake Letterman after just 6 months on the air Jay fricking throws him under the bus and says he could, even though it took him what 2 years to beat Letterman when he first started. If he wanted back in the late night game man up and go to Fox or hell go to ABC and do to Kimmel what you did to Conan, but don't frick over Conan for having the issues he had early on.

It really beside the point but Conan was never going to work with the Tonight Show. His humor didn't fit.

Maybe but that's assuming he doesn't grow into the role which he never got a chance to do.

Yeah, Conan's last 2 weeks on the Tonight Show were the two greatest in the history of late night television.

If I was in Leno's shoes and forced into an early retirement only to have my old gig offered back to me of course I'd take it. That said, Kimmel is the best.

I loved Late Shift the movie....waiting on the sequel to come out.

FWIW, I am a Letterman guy...like his sarcastic/dry humor. Leno "tries too hard" to be funny IMO. Conan can be funny at times...his show is "fun."

This may seem odd considering how their personalities come across on TV, but I think Leno and Conan are probably dicks in real life, while Letterman is the nice guy in real life.....just my guess based upon my observations.

I used to love the show, back in the early 80's I'd tape it on my Betamax and watch it after work. By the early 90's he'd become what he used to mock and his lighthearted, goofy humor was replaced by cynical, mean-spirited humor. I haven't been able to watch him since then.

Actually, I heard Letterman is the biggest dick of them all. Even to his guests.

Me too, and I thought he was still very good most of the 90's. I just think he's gotten lazy. He used to do alot of taped skits like working the drive-in at a Taco Bell or going on food binges and lots of live stuff where he'd have to improvise. He's good at that. But he's almost completely quit doing that and just basically does the same thing every night.

Also, he's become increasingly political every year. I'm moderate, so I don't get offended if a guy makes fun of either side. But when you are as one-sided as Letterman is it sours me a little.

By all accounts, you have it exactly backwards.

One of the things mentioned in the book was that Letterman worked at 4-day week at NBC. This allowed him to do many of those taped segments. When he got to CBS, he worked a 5-day week and was having trouble having to do the taped segments during evening times. He was getting exhausted keeping up with Leno's pace. So maybe that ultimately became a casualty of the work schedule.

I never laughed so much during late night TV as I did with Conan those 2 weeks. His premise that he was sticking it to the network with high cost skits was hilarious, as was the skits.

This. He became Dan Rather at the end of his career.

Read on Wiki that ABC offered him "Nightline." And he seriously considered it.

Crazy.

I seriously want to know how this is possible? Fallon is TERRIBLE and Ferguson is easily better than anyone else on late night television.

Late Night with David Letterman was probably the second best night time talk show ever. Can you rank anything above Johnny Carson? That would be the only thing above it.

RE: the Leno/Letterman, Leno/Carson, and Leno/O'Brien thing... kinda funny how they all side against Leno isn't it? Listen to what Howard Stern thinks of Leno sometime if you are ready for a little venom.

The Hugh Grant thing is right on.

What gives Leno staying power is that he is inoffensive and appeals to a broad common denominator. He's stolen a ton of ideas, many of them from Letterman and his producers. But frankly, I find Leno to be as bland and unfunny as a comedian can be.

Leno is not really a great guy. He's very careful about his image and has cultivated it carefully since the days of the Comedy Story in the '70's. But Leno is capable of being a nut cutting a-hole.

Letterman is not for everyone and his comedy is cynical. While not nearly as good and fresh as he used to be, I still watch Letterman occasionally. I cannot tolerate Leno, however.

This is my perception as well. I always found Letterman funnier. Even today. And yes, he has become lazy and is punching a clock. And yes, he's surly and cynical and openly one-sided politically.

But at least he's genuine. I get the feeling Leno's act is not.

Leno is the fricking worst.
It's basically Republican, or old people humor.
Bland, cliched garbage.
